Atkins is looking for an extraordinary individual to lead the northern section of our Systems Engineering team, to help us deliver rail projects and studies of varying scale; as well as help us to expand our services to the wider Transportation and Intelligent Mobility industry. You will be based in our Manchester or Birmingham offices, with responsibility for staff in both locations.

The Systems Engineering Practice works both in the UK and internationally, with projects ranging from bespoke analysis through to major infrastructure delivery projects including HS2 and East West Rail. We help our clients understand and make decisions confidently in complex situations; covering independent audit/assessment, technology development, engineering process, scheme development and design, construction and commissioning operations and maintenance. Understanding projects from different stakeholders’ point of view, we help our clients to find the best solutions to their challenges. Joining the Systems Engineering Practice will provide opportunities to:

  • Work with Clients and the wider business to develop and realise opportunities both within the UK and Internationally.
  • Take a leading role in driving the development and sharing of knowledge across the team, mentoring and developing other staff.
  • Technically govern the delivery of projects, whilst leading the delivery of Systems Engineering projects, including the management of wider systems activities (e.g. Safety, RAM, EMC, HF).
  • Work with both internal and external Customers to deliver System Engineering – including technical scope definition and management, process definition, solution integration, performance analysis and assurance.
  • Work with industry leading organisations to drive technical programme development.
  • Think critically, define and solve problems, challenge decisions and facilitate our clients thinking.
  • Engage with stakeholders to ensure that their needs are understood, and shape our services in response.
  • Work across the business to align process, share knowledge and drive innovation.
  • Continuously develop your skills and competence to maintain professional qualification.

As Section Head - North you will:

  • Be responsible for line managing a small but growing team of staff based in both Birmingham and Manchester, requiring a presence to be maintained in both locations.
  • Manage and drive the maintenance and development of the team’s competence through a planned and structured approach, including undertaking performance appraisals.
  • Contribute to the maintenance and delivery of the Systems Engineering business strategy and delivery plan for the System Engineering team.
  • Maintain business performance by meeting or exceeding the team’s utilisation targets.
  • Recruitment of staff in line with current business requirements and future opportunities.
  • Ensure that the team’s work is undertaken with appropriate levels of governance and assurance and in accordance with SNC-Lavalin’s management systems and procedures.

We are looking for systematic thinkers with a good and demonstrable understanding of Systems Engineering methods and process; as well as valid experience within at least one major industry, preferably connected with the railway industry. You should have significant experience within most of the key areas of:

  • The application and management of Systems Engineering within the rail industry.
  • Requirements authoring, derivation, traceability and management.
  • System Architecture development.
  • Integration management including interface definition, management and assurance.
  • System Assurance planning and delivery, including Verification and Validation (V&V).

An appreciation or understanding of Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) concepts, tools and techniques (including UML or SysML) is desirable but not essential. Experience in delivering engineering safety (including CSM-RA), reliability, availability and maintainability (RAM), rolling stock and rail planning and operations would also be welcomed; however are not essential.
 

Previous experience of Line and/or business management is desirable but not essential. Support will be provided to the right individual who can demonstrate the ability and potential to:

  • Take a proactive and self-aware approach to developing themselves, and others, both technically and behaviourally.
  • Incorporate constructive feedback into their personal development and provide feedback to others.
  • Deal with emerging and fluid situations in a pragmatic and strategic manor.
  • Develop and maintain team culture and morale.
