We are looking for Senior Bridge Engineers with broad ranging experience in bridge design, inspection and maintenance to join our Civil Engineering Practice in Chelmsford.

You will be responsible for designing elements of significant highway infrastructure projects with values of up to £80 million, delivering to the highest technical standards and quality targets. You will be a competent designer with proven ability who takes ownership and responsibility for design solutions.
Our current workload includes significant projects in London and across southern England for strategic highways and local authority clients.

You will be responsible to the Project Manager for providing robust technical solutions that meet Client ambitions and exceed their expectations.

Please note that the salary banding for the role is between £40000 and £50000 depending on experience.

Requirements
Qualifications

Incorporated or Chartered Engineer (or proven ability to work at the level expected of an experienced Incorporated Engineer)
MEng in Civil Engineering


Essential Criteria
• Proven competency in the design and assessment of Highway Bridges and other structures with an ability to analyse them appropriately according to project stage and complexity;
• Wide technical experience in the design and assessment of bridges and other highway structures, including in reinforced concrete, pre-stressed concrete and structural steel;
• Experience of software packages such as LUSAS, SAM-LEAP5, Superstress, RM Bridge, SAP2000-CSI Bridge, RM Bridge, Lusas, Plaxis, Abaqus, Autocad, C++, Fortran, Primavera, Microsoft Project;
• Detailed knowledge of relevant Eurocodes;
• Knowledge of relevant safety and welfare codes and legislation;
• Knowledge and understanding of the component parts of a project with a track record of successfully delivering a range of technically robust projects;
• Proven ability in practical detailing for elements of bridge engineering projects using appropriate standards and engineering judgment;
• Experience of preparing detailed Specifications and knowledge of Contract Documents;
• Proven ability to coach and develop less experienced team members;
• Excellent communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Supporting Project Managers in designing multidisciplinary infrastructure projects for both public sector and private clients;
• Project managing specific projects assigned from time to time, including developing fee estimates, delivery programmes and works cost estimates;
• Producing, checking and reviewing outline and detailed designs and assigning work to others;
• Leading project teams in the delivery of structural assessments, investigations and designs as requested by the team leader– ensuring delivery to time and budget;
• Supporting team members and less experienced engineers in all aspects of bridge design;
• Preparation and presentation of project reports to Clients and other stakeholders;
• Evaluating engineering problems and providing advice to Clients and other team members;
• Working with other bridge/structural engineers, highway engineers, geotechnical engineers and architects from across the business.
• Liaising with stakeholders and Clients as required on technical aspects of projects;
• Keeping up-to-date with current methods and design guidelines;
• Compliance with Quality, Safety, Environment and managerial procedures;
• Supporting the Team Leader/Manager in the overall management of the team.

The Individual
• Be self-motivated with well-developed interpersonal skills.
• Have a track record of achieving training development objectives and technical achievement to achieve professional status within the bridge engineering discipline.
• Be an effective team player with the desire and ability to lead bridge design and assessment teams.
• Have good written and verbal communication skills
• Be able to build excellent working relationships with colleagues and clients.
• Have a confident and professional manner.
• Be able to exercise judgement in your own work without referring often to more senior staff.
• Be highly motivated to deliver against demanding programme and cost targets.
• Be able to come up with innovative solutions to technical problems.

This role may require security clearance and offers of employment will be dependent on obtaining the relevant level of clearance. If this is necessary it will be discussed with you at interview.
