Senior Civil Engineer - Highways

The Transportation business covers all aspects of multidisciplinary design and management, from inception and options appraisal through to detailed design and delivery/construction support. It is our centre of excellence for the design of highway and rail infrastructure projects. We aim to be the first-choice designer for local and national highway authorities, contractors and developers.

We are working on many high-profile projects and frameworks nationwide, including Cambridge to Huntingdon A14 upgrade, Smart Motorways and Roads Investment Programmes through the Collaborative Delivery Framework for Highways England, HS2 and the West Midlands Shared Professional Services with a number of local authorities.

To meet our growth ambitions, we are seeking high calibre Senior Civil Engineers (Highways) in our Birmingham office to work on an expanding portfolio of the biggest and most challenging UK projects. Using your excellent people, technical and delivery skills, you will drive a variety of civil and structural designs for new build, renewal, maintenance and assessment works. There will also be the opportunity to work on overseas projects and with our internationally based design teams.

Responsibilities
Technical:
• Leading technical delivery of engineering projects and engineering input into complex, multi-disciplinary projects.
• Using your excellent analytical skills to derive potential solutions to engineering problems and engineering judgement to appraise and recommend options.
• Overseeing completion of designs, production and review of design documentation including sketches, drawings, calculations, reports and specifications.
• Staying abreast of industry developments and changes in standards.

People:
• Line management of staff.
• Mentoring and supporting the development of the team.
• Developing junior staff by technical training and mentoring.

Stakeholder:
• Maintaining and developing excellent professional relationships which can secure repeat business.
• Presenting to clients and stakeholders in a professional, responsive and client focused manner.
• Client management of projects.

Management:
• Programme and financial management of projects.
• Expanding the Atkins business and assisting with the delivery of business targets.
• Preparing fee offers for agreement with the client.
• Resource management.
• Working collaboratively across the Atkins Group.


Requirements
Essential:
• BEng, MEng or MSc degree in civil engineering or equivalent.
• Incorporated or Chartered status and corporate membership of a relevant professional institution such as the ICE, CIHT or IHE. A strong candidate in other areas and is not yet professionally recognised, but who is close to a professional review will also be considered.
• Experience of working with our key clients, such as Local Authorities, Highways England, Network Rail, Developers and/or major Contractors.
• Ability to contribute to bids and tenders.
• Good working knowledge of the CDM 2015 regulations.
• Ability to develop and agree scopes and manage the internal technical supply chain, including budgets, programme and quality of deliverables, delivering within a set timeframe.
• Good project management skills, commercial awareness, financial control and ability to deliver across a range of contract types. This will include an ability to manage stakeholders such as specialist suppliers, independent checkers and Local Authorities.
• Sound knowledge of Project Governance and Development Processes for Network Rail, Highways England and/or Local Authorities.
• Thorough understanding of relevant design standards, including those of Network Rail and Highways England.
• Ability to research information and data independently and ability to resolve contractual issues.
• Full UK/EU Driving licence.
• Strong communication skills.

Desirable:
• Commercially astute and an excellent communicator with the desire to take on extra management responsibilities and keep on developing your skills and our team.
• Acting as a named person under the CDM 2015 Principal Designer role.

Occasional travel and overnight stays across the UK may be required.

This role may require security clearance and offers of employment will be dependent on obtaining the relevant level of clearance. If this is necessary it will be discussed with you at interview.
