Atkins is seeking an energetic, detail-oriented and highly motivated individual to assume a Sr. Civil Engineer (Land Development) position in our expanding Atlanta, GA office.
MAJOR FUNCTION/ROLE
Under supervision, applies technical professional proficiency to the investigation of engineering problems, the coordination of project activities, and the preparation of preliminary plans and documents. On design assignments, progresses toward learning how to clearly convey the design intent through engineering drawings and specifications. On engineering and planning assignments, continues to develop a knowledge of the fundamentals of engineering processes and to apply them successfully to operating systems. On construction assignments, continues to develop an understanding of construction methods and the translation of engineering plans and specifications into constructed product. Upholds engineering ethics and standards of conduct.
JOB DUTIES

Designs and develops plans and drawings, primarily for commercial, industrial and residential land development projects (e.g. geometric, utility and grading plans, roadways, stormwater management, erosion and sediment control, etc.), earthwork calculations, quantity takeoffs, exhibits, etc.

Develops preliminary layout and/or final drawings of parking lots, roadways, sanitary sewer lines, storm drains and waterlines, storm water retention/detention facilities, and mass grading.

Provides engineering services during construction activities by reviewing shop drawings for conformance with specifications; prepares records and progress reports defining construction progress; observes construction procedures under the guidance of a more experienced professional, and evaluates the results from quality control testing.

Researches feasibility of alternative design approaches, site conditions, and regulatory agency specifications.

Contributes to the development of specifications and permit applications, and writing miscellaneous reports.

Prepares preliminary cost and material quantity estimates, including earthwork takeoffs.

Participates in quality control checks, maintaining quality standards in all work produced, checking computations, and/or reviewing designs and drawings performed by others.

Coordinates with other disciplines as required.

Performs field observations of construction where appropriate.

Performs such other duties as the supervisor may from time to time deem necessary.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
- B.S. or M.S. in Engineering. M.S. or graduate level technical coursework preferred. This level may be achieved by Engineers with 4 years of experience since B.S. or 1 year since M.S. Typical incumbent has 6 to 10 years of engineering experience since Bachelor’s degree.
- Experience with local municipalities and agencies a plus.
- Experience working in Metro Atlanta, GA, and/or southern U.S. a plus.
- Engineering design experience on commercial, industrial and residential land development projects preferred, but not required.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS
- Must be able to take direction from project manager and senior engineering staff to manage a team of CAD technician(s) and/or designer(s).
- Must be able to coordinate well with others, including other in-house structural, highway and drainage design teams, water resources staff, landscape architects, surveyors, subconsultants, etc.
- Must have ability to process paper/electronic documents and utilize computer equipment.
- Must have ability to prepare and submit design packages to various municipalities and agencies having jurisdiction for review.
- Must have ability to communicate clearly, both orally and in writing.
- Must have ability to visit project sites, if necessary.
- Must have ability to assemble and analyze data.
