Atkins seeks an energetic and highly motivated self-starter to join our Austin, TX Construction Management Group as a Senior Construction Inspector.


MAJOR FUNCTION/ROLE

Under general supervision, researches and interprets contract requirements to determine whether construction work is proceeding in substantial compliance with plans, contracts, specifications and special provisions. NOTE: Incumbents do not supervise any contractors' activities and are not responsible for job site safety.


JOB DUTIES
  • Reads contract plans, specifications, shop drawings, and regulatory agency manuals.
  • Observes construction work such as trench excavation, pipe placement, backfill operations, pile driving, structure placement, steel reinforcement, concrete pouring, signalization and lighting, etc.
  • Performs density and asphalt tests; samples and verifies certification of materials.
  • Reviews shop drawings within limited area of expertise; logs and reports materials and work.
  • Assists in directing the daily activities of less experienced staff.
  • Performs such other duties as the supervisor may from time to time deem necessary.




EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • High school diploma (or equivalent) plus ten years related experience OR an Associates Degree in a related technical field plus eight years related experience is required.
  • Previous experience with TXDOT and/or TXDOT Projects highly preferred. Other DOTs at least required.
  • Must meet TXDOT-Specific Construction Inspector experience requirements.


SPECIAL SKILLS
  • Good oral communications skills and ability to organize information. Math computation skills and understanding of contract plans and specifications.


PROFESSIONAL REGISTRATIONS
  • No Professional Registrations required.
  • May be required to obtain certification in nuclear density, aggregate, concrete and asphalt testing or other applicable areas.


ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Must have Department of Transportation Experience.
  • Requirements typically include: ability to walk long distances, climb ladders, stoop, squat and crawl down into ditches; ability to observe construction activities and distinguish colors; and ability to perceive back-up alarms and other warnings. 
  • Must be able to work outdoors in varying temperatures and weather conditions, subject to insects, flooded terrain and equipment/traffic hazards. Job also requires ability to process paper and electronic documents and utilize computer. 
  • Ability to communicate clearly both orally and in writing. 
  • Job also requires ability to plan and prioritize tasks, and review contract documents, project plans and progress reports. 
  • If position requires driving company vehicle, incumbent must have valid driver's license and a driving record that meets company policy.
