Atkins Nuclear has been operating for over 40 years, with operations based in the UK, Europe, the Middle East, Asia and North America. Atkins in currently embarked on an exciting journey to become the global leader in providing decommissioning and waste management services.

As a result of continued growth, we are looking to recruit a range of experienced technical specialists who can help us in achieving our goal in becoming the global leader in this arena.

Based at Whitehaven, Cumbria, on Britain’s Energy Coast and within sight of the beautiful Lake District, you will work on and help coordinate technical projects within a team of nuclear specialists, with engineering support from other disciplines. Successful applicants will have the opportunity to enhance their existing technical, project and managerial skills through targeted training and continual professional development.


Requirements

Candidates should possess the following qualifications, skills and experience:

Qualifications

• Degree, Masters or other postgraduate qualified in an environmental, scientific technical, radioactive waste management or decommissioning disciplines


Essential Criteria
Demonstrable experience of working within the nuclear industry, with knowledge and expertise in one or more of the following areas:
• Environmental Permitting (Radioactive Substances)
• Compliance with Nuclear Site License Conditions under the Nuclear Installations Act 1965
• Environmental assessment studies e.g. Radiological Impact Assessment, BAT Assessment
• Environmental modelling codes
• Development and implementation of waste management strategies
• Radiochemistry and radioanalytical techniques
• Environmental monitoring and measurement
• Waste characterisation, inventory and sampling plans
• Nuclear dismantling and decontamination techniques
• Waste packaging, storage, transportation and disposal
• Spent fuel storage

Excellent communication and presentation skills.
Experience of liaising directly with stakeholders and clients.
Ability to communicate effectively with a range of internal / external stakeholders.
Commercial and project awareness.
Ability to work alone or as part of a team.

Desirable Criteria
• Ideally, possesses proven previous relevant work experience for the Consultant/Senior Consultant role (gained from working directly for a nuclear site license company, a consultancy or a regulator)
• Can demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the legislative framework relating to nuclear materials and nuclear licensed sites
• Can demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of radioactivity, its behaviour in, and impacts on the environment
• Can demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of radioactive waste management issues
• Has the ability to manage and coordinate self, individuals and teams to ensure efficient project delivery
• Is already, or is working towards becoming, an accredited Radioactive Waste Adviser
• Has already gained or is close to gaining Chartership with an appropriate professional body, e.g. IEMA, IES, SRP
• Evidence of professional networking

Responsibilities

Our Nuclear Environment and Radioactive Waste Management Consultants are responsible for providing specialist advice during the design, operation and decommissioning of nuclear facilities and for the production of all environmental and waste management documentation required under Site License Conditions and the Environmental Permit.

The successful applicant will be responsible for provision of support to a range of projects. Duties will include:

• The self-delivery or supervision of delivery by others, of technical reports
• Assisting in the coordination and management of project delivery
• Assisting in the production of bids/proposals for new work
• Helping to mentor others within the team

The Individual

We are looking for talented and motivated individuals who are prepared to undertake a diverse range of tasks and are keen to learn new skills as required. You will have strong computer literacy, be articulate and possess strong inter-personal, verbal and written communication skills. Successful candidates will be able to demonstrate that they already have, or are ready to assume, a position of increased responsibility within a team environment.

Training

Atkins develops individuals through a portfolio of training and development activities designed to help you make the best of your abilities and talents. These are reviewed with individuals through an annual appraisal process. We actively support staff in achieving corporate membership of relevant institutions.

Additional Information

• Some work outside normal office hours may be necessary. Travel to and from client sites and/or temporary secondment to client’s offices may also be required.
• This is an exciting time for Atkins, we are rapidly expanding our waste and nuclear environmental portfolio to become a more global organisation and take a greater market share in the radioactive waste management sector. There could be opportunities for international travel and applicants with a desire for non-UK based assignments will be welcomed.

This role may require security clearance and offers of employment will be dependent on obtaining the relevant level of clearance. If this is necessary it will be discussed with you at interview.
