Our Transportation Division is currently seeking Senior Engineers in our Trowbridge office to support the delivery of a wide variety of multi-disciplinary highways projects in Wiltshire and the wider UK.

Using your people, technical and delivery skills, you’ll be responsible for delivering a variety of civil and structural design packages for new build highways schemes, renewals schemes, and maintenance and assessment works. Your duties will include the management of both individual design packages and assist in the management of entire projects. You will also need to be able to manage resources and project finances to ensure our schemes are delivered profitably, to programme, and in accordance with Atkins’ quality assurance systems.

You will be part of one of the largest transportation consultancies in the UK, and a leading supplier of engineering services to government, regulatory and local authorities, infrastructure owners and operators. In our Trowbridge office, our major clients include Wiltshire Council as well as other Local Authorities across the south and south-west of England. There will also be opportunities to work on projects for Highways England, the MoD, Network Rail and other Train Operating Companies, Design & Build Contractors and other niche clients.

The majority of your work will comprise highway projects in Wiltshire, being delivered under the Local Authority Framework Contract we have with Wiltshire Council. As a large Unitary Authority, the range and complexity of the projects we undertake for them is large and varied.

Atkins provide opportunities to work overseas and much of our work is undertaken in conjunction with our internationally based design teams.

You will have a background in civil engineering design and experience of delivery of a range of multi-disciplinary projects within highway environments. You’ll be familiar with working in large, geographically dispersed multidisciplinary design teams on projects at varying stages of development from feasibility to detailed design.

Requirements
Qualifications
o BEng / MEng or MSc degree in civil engineering or equivalent.
o Chartered status and corporate membership of the ICE, IHT or IStructE.

Essential Criteria
o Experience of working with key clients such as, Local Authorities, Highways England, Network Rail, Developers and/or major Contractors.
o Ability to contribute to bids and tenders.
o Sufficient experience to undertake technical reviews of designs.
o Good understanding of relevant design standards, including to DMRB, TSRGD, MCHW Eurocodes and those of Highways England and Manual for Streets.
o Ability to develop and agree scopes and manage the internal technical supply chain, including budgets, programme and quality of deliverables, delivering within set time frame.
o Good project management skills, commercial awareness, financial control and ability to deliver across a range of contract types. This will include an ability to manage stakeholders, e.g. specialist suppliers, independent checkers and local authorities.
o Commercially astute and an excellent communicator with the desire to take on extra management responsibilities and keep on developing your skills and our team.
o Knowledge of Project Governance and Development Processes for Highways England and / or Local Authorities.
o Ability to research information and data independently and ability to find solutions to complex problems.
o Sound interpersonal skills and ability to converse with a wide range of Clients and colleagues across a number of engineering disciplines.
o Awareness of statutory permissions processes, e.g. Approval in Principal, Streetworks, Planning approvals for highways schemes, archaeology and ecological legislation, ad funding application processes.
o An appreciation of the utilities diversion processes, including C2, C3 and C4.
o Excellent spoken and written English.

Desirable Criteria
o Knowledge of business models adopted in the sector and commercial and technical risks.
o Experience of client engagement and business development activities.
o Experience in developing strong and sustainable Client relationships.
o Experience in designing out risks associated with utilities clashes.
o Positive and practical with experience of managing resources, mentoring engineers and inspiring multidisciplinary teams to exceed client expectations.
o Knowledge gained from working within a contractor and/or client organisation.
o Experience of supervising highway works contracts.
o Hold a valid UK driving licence.


Responsibilities
Technical
o Leading technical delivery of civil engineering projects / civil engineering input into multi-disciplinary projects.
o Using your analytical skills and experience of the industry to derive potential solutions to engineering problems and engineering judgement to appraise and recommend options.
o Overseeing completion of designs and the production of and review design documentation including sketches, drawings, calculations, reports and specifications.
o Staying abreast of industry developments and changes in standards.
o Ensuring work produced is technically accurate and delivered in accordance with the appropriate standards and to Atkins’ quality assurance processes.

People
o Developing more junior staff by technical training and mentoring. You may be given the opportunity to act as a Delegated Engineer or Supervising Civil Engineer for those under formal training agreements.

Stakeholder
o Maintaining and developing excellent professional relationships which can secure repeat business.
o Presenting to clients and key stakeholders in a professional, responsive and client focused manner.
o Client, programme and financial management of projects.

Management
o Assisting with the preparation of fee offers for agreement with the client.
o Reviewing commercial proposals and or assisting with the commercial review of Atkins’ bids.
o Assigning to or undertaking the checking / reviewing the project team’s work.
o Assisting the Regional Highways Manager and PMs to plan delivery of portfolios
o Working collaboratively across the Atkins Group.

The Individual
You should have a good working knowledge of UK highway design and of the construction and maintenance of highways works. You should also be motivated and diligent in the discharge of your responsibilities, and be willing to seek advice from your colleagues where the job involves areas of work that are new to you.

Your project management skills shall ensure you deliver projects to programme whilst ensuring Atkins’ quality control processes are adhered to. You must also know how to manage budgets to the Client’s satisfaction, whilst maintaining profit margins to Atkins’ satisfaction.
