Due to an increasing project portfolio, an exciting opportunity has arisen for a Senior Hydrogeologist to join Atkins’ Infrastructure business within the Contaminated Land and Hydrogeology team based in either Epsom, London or Warrington.

The successful candidate will be an important part of this innovative and technically excellent team helping deliver major projects and developing the growing team. Atkins is the first company in the UK to have a Geological Society Accredited training scheme specifically for hydrogeologists, demonstrating our commitment to staff development and training. Atkins also invests in our core technical disciplines with established technical networks for all aspects of hydrogeology which drives knowledge sharing, staff development and innovation across our practice and broader business.

Atkins’ hydrogeologists use the full range of their skills, working on water resources and land contamination projects as well as providing innovative solutions to engineering challenges. Our client and project base is highly diverse with current projects in the nuclear new build sector, oil and gas, regeneration and redevelopment and major road and rail projects. We work on projects in the UK and around the world.

As a member of our team you will manage hydrogeological projects working with our experienced team to deliver excellence to our diverse client base. You will work closely with a wide range of other professionals to deliver holistic solutions to engineering and environmental problems and to identify opportunities. You will be expected to be involved with project management, business development, the training and mentoring of more junior staff and enhancement of technical excellence within the team.

Responsibilities

• Providing Technical leadership on hydrogeological projects
• Managing the delivery of hydrogeological projects and elements of multi-disciplinary projects
• Preparation and review of reports – including site investigation design and interpretation, development of robust Conceptual Site Models, risk assessments, numerical modelling and design reports
• Production and checking of complex groundwater models relating to groundwater flow, contamination transport and civil engineering challenges
• Preparation of proposals and input into bids for multi-disciplinary infrastructure projects
• Training and mentoring of staff and supporting the development of technical excellence
• Preparation of relevant Environmental Impact Assessment chapters for a wide range of projects
• Business Development – supporting development with clients within key strategic markets such Nuclear, Transport, Energy and Oil and Gas.

Requirements

Qualifications

• BSc in geology or other relevant subject (e.g. geology, earth science or other science discipline)
• MSc or PhD in hydrogeology or related subject
• Chartered Membership of relevant professional body (or actively working towards chartership)

Essential Criteria


• Extensive post-graduate experience working in hydrogeology, ideally within a consultancy environment
• Proven project management experience managing projects and small project teams to deliver work to a high standard
• Excellent communication skills and proven ability to work as part of a team as well as individual working
• Good understanding of commercial issues and business development
• Good time management skills

Desirable Criteria

• Experience in engineering hydrogeology
• Experience in numerical modelling of groundwater (ideally with experience in MODFLOW and/or FEFLOW as well as 2-d packages, for example SEEP/W)
• Experience in qualitative and quantitative controlled waters risk assessment (ideally with experience in common analytical modelling packages such as P20, ConSim, RAM)
• Experience of working on projects within the Oil & Gas or Nuclear sectors
• Experienced in designing and managing ground investigations
• Willingness to travel and take part in overseas projects

Atkins develops individuals through a portfolio of training and development activities designed to help you make the best of your abilities and talents and has a Geological Society accredited training scheme specifically for hydrogeologists. Training and development needs are reviewed with individuals through an annual appraisal process. We actively support staff in achieving and maintaining corporate membership of relevant institutions.
