Atkins are looking for talented individuals with technical and leadership skills to join our Strategy and Business Case teams based in Manchester.

You can help us capitalise on the Government’s significant transport infrastructure investment programmes by unlocking and leading work from local and regional clients such as TfGM, TfN, local authorities on either side of the Pennines, as well as national clients including the Department for Transport, Network Rail and Highways England.

We want individuals who can lead teams, engage with clients and understand complex projects from every angle, helping our customers to find the best solutions to transport challenges. We advise on everything from policy and strategy development, scheme costs, benefits and economic growth potential, to the best options and new ways to unlock investment.

Key responsibilities of this role may include, but are not limited to:

• Team leadership, resource management and technical development of staff.
• Leading bids and projects, in transport planning, focussing on strategy and business cases.
• Developing a strong performing strategy, economic and business technical capability including the development of new service propositions.
• Managing or directing a portfolio of projects and bids involving the above disciplines as well as on large complex projects for key clients.
• Playing a key role in work winning on a wide range of transport planning areas including policy and strategy, scheme appraisal and business cases, evaluation, and stakeholder engagement ensuring technical excellence and a first-class product for our clients.
• Developing relationships with key clients working with our “Market” teams and the Transport for the North Client Director to significantly increase revenue from North of England strategic clients. This will include working with the Framework Directors for our frameworks with Local and Combined Authorities within the North of England, Highways England, HS2 and Network Rail to maximise opportunities.
• Identifying and implementing opportunities for deploying innovative styles and techniques in project delivery.
• Overseeing and assuring the financial and commercial management of projects and bids.

The Team and Our Work

Our Manchester team is part of Atkins’ nation-wide Transportation Consultancy Practice covering all aspects of transport planning. We have a strong forward workload with major clients in central and local government. Our teams are currently delivering exciting and important policy, strategy, economic analysis and research projects throughout the transportation sector.

At a local level, we have frameworks with several local authority clients and a track record of making a real difference on the ground with current and recent projects including HS2 Piccadilly Wider Connectivity Study; Bury and Radcliffe Transport Strategy; TfN Sustainability Appraisal and business case and strategy support to TfGM.


Requirements

We welcome applications from highly motivated and skilled individuals who are or have:

• Strong track record of managing the operation of teams to successfully deliver against business objectives and targets, ideally within a consultancy environment.
• Proven track record leading teams to deliver high quality technical transport planning work within commercial and financial constraints.
• Excellent communication skills to engage effectively with clients and teams across Atkins, understanding and meeting client requirements, unlocking new work and developing team performance.
• Highly knowledgeable about the current UK transport policy context and able to utilise this knowledge through projects and client interaction.
• Strong experience and expert knowledge of transport appraisal techniques, tools and guidance.
• Experience in leading the preparation of method statements, bids and/or client communication and marketing material.
• Committed to continuous improvement and innovation across transport planning.
