Senior/ Principal Consultant Transport Data Analytics

Atkins’ Transportation division is a business of 3,000 talented professionals covering highway, rail and local transport sectors in the UK. We are organised according to Practices responsible for winning and delivering work in technical capability areas and Markets (focusing on developing strategic client relationships and winning work across local transport, strategic rail and strategic highways markets).

The Consultancy Practice comprises c500 staff delivering technical, planning and advisory consultancy services to a predominantly UK client base. This includes a range of specialist technical consultancy services focused on the management and analysis of transport and transport-related data that supports a wider offer in network operations, asset management and transport modelling and transport scheme development. Increasingly this entails the use of large, complex datasets from different sources requiring new approaches to data management, fusion of data from different sources, and the development and application of advanced analytical methods. This includes using contemporary data from Mobile Network Operators, GPS providers, vehicle logistics and operations, digital asset inventories, asset and transport sensors, ticket data, network operational data, video analytics and data about transport network users characteristics and preferences. It will also entail, increasingly, looking at developing a real-time data analysis capabilities and the development of predictive analytics tools.

Sitting within our transport modelling and data analytics team, the aim of the role is to inject data science discipline knowledge, perspective and experience into our existing team which has developed its skills and capabilities from a predominantly transport-focused perspective.
This role reports directly to the Practice Director for the Modelling and Data Analytics sub-practice within the overall Consultancy Practice, and will be part of the sub-practices senior team.


Essential

• Recent experience in the application of data science to providing new insights to business and customer operations.
• Experienced in cloud computing platforms and researching new trends in the industry and utilising up-to-date technology and analytical skills to support projects in a business environment
• Experienced in the development of multiple custom data models, combining data features to determine search models and translating business needs into data requirements, to drive innovative business solutions and develop a cross-sector Information Architecture to achieve high levels of data interoperability
• Experience in building learning systems to analyse and filter continuous data flows and offline data analysis
• Capability in conducting advanced statistical analysis to determine trends and significant data relationships, and discover causal effects
• Experience in building large and complex datasets from multiple sources in order to build and train algorithms for predicting future data characteristics, to drive innovative business solutions and with algorithms tested, validated, and applied to large data sets
• Track record in collaborating with project teams to solutioneer disruptive data and modelling approaches, and provide analytical support and guidance to services across the business

Desirable

• Experience of data relevant to the transport sector, including mobile phone, GPS and traffic data
• Client experience in the transport sector
• Ability to demonstrate experience of building effective networks both internally and external to the organisation
• Excellent communication skills and stakeholder engagement in a technical environment
• A disciplined thinker and analytical, numerate, problem solver who has strategic judgement and the capacity to think complex issues through and develop effective solutions in a timely fashion
• Experience of successfully operating within a target driven environment

Responsibilities
The role holder will:

• Act as the subject matter expert for data science across the Consultancy practice, with a technical responsibility for technical specification, advice and review across our project portfolio
• Work as part of project teams on existing transport data and analysis commissions, with a remit to drive innovation in how we manage, use and analyse the data to improve efficiency, reliability and derive new and additional value for our clients
• Take a lead role on projects to develop and apply the tools and processes needed to establish new value propositions to clients in the transport sector involving data exploitation and predictive analytics
• Working on major competitive tenders to secure work from clients, requiring the development of data and analysis capability. The role holder will develop new approaches to data exploitation, typically working closely with partners in the Intelligent Mobility space
• Work with the Modelling and Data Analytics Practice Director and other senior staff to set the strategic direction of and shape the future capability and capacity of the practice. This will include helping define the future skills and capabilities of the team (including our team in our Global Design Centre in India), supporting training and recruitment initiatives, internal and external profile raising (e.g. conferences), and defining current and future IT needs.

• Existing profile within the data science community of either a large corporate organisation of a specialist data science consultancy
• Experience in delivering projects in a target driven environment
• Highly motivated and ambitious for the success of the team

• Excellent team player, able to influence technical and delivery staff and collaborate effectively with other divisional colleagues.
