Are you looking for an exciting opportunity to develop your career as an ecological consultant? We are seeking an ecologist to join our Scottish team in the Glasgow office. This is a permanent position.

The Ecology team within Atkins’ is committed to providing expert and pragmatic specialist ecological advice in connection with infrastructure, development and all sectors.

Our work includes protected species assessments, habitat management plans, mitigation, site restoration and rehabilitation measures, specialist services for planning applications, and Environmental Impact Assessments. We have a reputation for delivering technically demanding projects and innovative approaches, and work for a range of government departments, multi-national industrial clients, funding agencies and lenders, property developers, and regulatory authorities.

Atkins currently has over 70 ecologists based in offices around the UK. We operate across the UK and internationally, working closely with colleagues from other environmental and engineering disciplines. For this position, the majority of work will be within Scotland, but there will be technical collaboration and networking with the ecologists working all around the UK.

The Role

The successful candidate will be expected to:
• Provide technical support and leadership to the Scotland Ecology team and beyond;
• Manage and lead the ecological input to a varied range of projects across different sectors including leading field surveys and mitigation works;
• Undertake reporting including ecological impact assessments, EIA chapters and HRAs;
• Undertake check and/or review of reports;
• Manage and work within deadlines and budgets;
• Prepare internal bids and external tenders and help win work;
• Manage their own time and workload in collaboration with other team members;
• Continue to develop their technical skills paying attention to CPD requirements; and
• Work effectively as part of a team, mentoring more junior staff, working closely with other professionals (environmental scientists, engineers, planners) throughout Atkins to provide a consistent and integrated service to clients.


If you are looking for a new challenge and want to join a dynamic, enthusiastic team of environmental specialists working on exciting opportunities then please get in touch. You will need full membership of the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM) and either have, or be able to demonstrate working towards, Chartered Ecologist or Chartered Environmentalist status.

Essential Experience

The following experience is essential for the role:
• Experience as a Senior Ecologist in a similar (i.e. consultancy) role;
• Experience in writing technical reports including EcIA’s, HRA’s, licence applications and internal and external proposals as well as experience of checking and/or reviewing technical reports and proposals;
• Experience of project co-ordination and management of large budgets;
• The applicant must demonstrate integrity and commitment and a collaborative and pro-active approach to work with ecology team members, clients and other professionals;
• Good planning and organisational skills, including taking responsibility for managing their time;
• Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written;
• Proficiency in standard IT applications, including Word, Excel and email;
• An understanding of the importance of health and safety risk management; and
• A full valid UK/EEC driving licence.
