We are looking for a creative thinker with strong commercial and organisational skills to join our outstanding team of heritage specialists, which includes: heritage managers, archaeologists, building archaeologists and cultural tourism consultants. We provide expert advice and planning services to clients throughout the world; working on highly sensitive and high-profile projects such as World Heritage Sites in the Middle East and large-scale infrastructure programmes in the UK. We have a growing reputation for innovation and engagement particularly on large infrastructure programmes, such as HS2, for which we have undertaken a number of bespoke and specialist studies.
We have a vacancy for a Senior / Principal Heritage Consultant Team Leader within our Birmingham office. The role is ideal for someone who has strong technical capabilities and managerial experience. The post-holder is expected to manage delivery of heritage projects providing expert advice and support across our UK and international projects; and undertaking line management responsibilities, operational delivery and reporting for the whole heritage team.
Alongside very strong technical abilities, we would expect candidates to have:
•Good knowledge of commercial aspects – contracts, pricing, risk management, change control and bid / project management review processes;
•Proven experience in successful resource and line management;
Applicants with a background in archaeology / the historic environment and have experience of line management, business / operational delivery would be welcomed.
The key technical responsibilities of the role include:
•Providing expert advice to a range of clients, internal teams on a diverse range of projects;
•Overseeing, preparing and contributing to environmental statements, heritage statements, desk based assessments, written schemes of investigation and consent applications;
•Management of medium to large scale projects to ensure they are delivered on time and budget;
•Contribution of key technical expertise and knowledge to the team in order to maintain and improve the quality of our work and the expertise of our people;
•Key member of heritage technical excellence plan strategy and delivery - engaging new clients, products and business strands;
•Acting as technical lead and managing project teams;
•Management of sub-consultants and archaeological contractors;
•Technical Reviewer role;
•Liaison with client teams;
•Sourcing new opportunities and providing technical contribution to tenders.
The key managerial responsibilities of the role are:
•Supporting direct reports and other junior staff through mentoring and line management;
•Engagement with resource management system (RMS) and liaison with Heritage RMS co-ordinator;
•Reporting on heritage team utilisation, bidding and project delivery and heritage business operations to Planning and Environmental Consenting Practice;
•Working closely with Practice Manager for Midlands, South West and Wales, delivering timely reporting on staff utilisation; operational needs and future planning for national / regional heritage team.
•Undertaking Team Leader role for Heritage team in Midlands, South West and Wales region;
•Supporting commercial and business development decisions
Requirements
Qualifications
•A good first degree in archaeology /. history / anthropology
•Relevant Masters level or higher qualification in a recognised historic environment subject
Essential Criteria
•Full knowledge of the planning process (including EIA) and be fully conversant with the relevant environmental / heritage legislation and guidance
•Experience of delivering environmental impact assessments and supporting programmes for complex large infrastructure and / or major development schemes
•Robust knowledge of UK archaeology and history
•Willingness to work across the UK in client and Atkins’ offices as fits project requirements.
•Experience in a commercial consultancy environment
•UK driving licence.
