As a global multi-disciplinary consultancy the Aerospace, Defence, Security and Technology (ADS&T) Division within Atkins is at the leading edge of Safety Critical Systems and is currently recruiting for a Senior/Principal (Nuclear/Maritime) Safety Consultant. Atkins offers a range of independent and unbiased advice in engineering, technical and strategic advisory services to a wide breadth of markets and clients.

‘Atkins is a member of the Aurora Engineering Partnership which, subject to contract, will support the Defence Equipment & Support (DE&S) transformation strategy as the Engineering Delivery Partner’.

We are strengthening the Safety consulting team within ADS&T to meet increasing market demand for advisory Strategic Safety Critical Management services. These services include business operations, strategy, people management, change management, accounting/finance, risk management, asset management and information systems all coordinated to realise maximum value from physical assets.

The role requires the successful candidate to work both independently and provide thought leadership and direction to the Safety Capability, developing and delivering safety management solutions for both simple and complex systems or platforms and at the enterprise level. The role is technically and personally challenging, whilst being incredibly rewarding. The role requires the successful candidate to work under their own guidance, manage project teams and interact with customers and key stakeholders at a high level.

The successful candidate will also provide thought leadership in data driven analysis of client asset management objectives through data analytics and a range of digital asset management systems to develop and define client objectives at an operationally strategic level. In some cases, the successful candidate will work with clients to develop, design, procure and implement a digital asset management system for the client.


Overview / Requirements

Successful candidate will be required to travel regionally and nationally as per role and project needs.

Prime requirements for the role are:

• Demonstrate an excellent understanding of the technical and operational issues fundamental to process and technical safety and risk engineering across the Maritime and/or Defence Nuclear domains.
• Demonstrate recent, relevant experience within Maritime and/or Defence Nuclear programmes.
• Confident in building excellent relationships with our clients, you will also be able to build excellent relationships within the team, being able to provide comprehensive support to a team within a project, and mentor others, creating an environment where team members are encouraged, challenged and motivated to “be the best they can”.
• Versatile and adaptable with the ability to identify alternative solutions and approaches to meet client’s requirements whilst addressing the safety arguments.

Skills / Qualifications

Technical Knowledge and Experience

Essential


• Relevant engineering degree or equivalent, or working towards Chartership;
• Demonstrable experience within the Maritime and Civil and/or Defence Nuclear domains;
• Membership as a safety professional with a substantial level of safety experience within safety critical/regulatory domains;
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills commensurate with the role, including the preparation and presentation of reports to both internal and external customers;
• Project engineering skills to ensure studies and projects are delivered within agreed budgets and schedules;
• Experience in facilitating HAZID, HAZOPs, LOPAs and other risk assessment workshops;
• Development of ALARP arguments for process safety risks;
• Authoring of HSE/safety cases for design and operations phases;
• Leadership of project teams and mentoring others in a technical capacity;
• Strong Quality, Safety, Environment (QSE) focus, with demonstrable track record of implementing these standards;
• Ability to engage and influence at all levels of stakeholder, both internally and externally;
• Able to establish clear client requirements, communicating plans effectively back to clients.
• Demonstrable record of accomplishment in the development of Safety arguments/solutions at enterprise, platform and system level;
• Built sustainable relationships with customers and developed future business opportunities, influencing and managing these through to new work; and
• Confident in supporting business growth, interfacing with clients to understand their needs and convert opportunities into successful workstreams.

Desirable

• Candidates will be expected to demonstrate extensive knowledge and understanding of MOD Maritime Safety and Environmental management systems and procedures, including DSA02-DMR (MOD Shipping Regulations for Safety & Environmental Protection);
• Demonstrable familiarity with JSP 375/430/518/520 and Defence Standard 00-101 (Design Standards for Explosives Safety in MOD Ships and Submarines);
• Demonstrable familiarity with Safety Management and Hazard Area Certification Plans, Safety Case Reports and supported Certificates of Safety Critical Systems;
• Experience in design and risk management for safety critical systems, including technical specification writing, regulatory compliance auditing and safety justifications;
• Knowledge of principles and methods of strategic safety management and business planning across multiple domains;
• Ability to deal well with ambiguity and new content in a very broad range of situations;
• Ability to work independently or as part of a team and contribute with a problem-solving, investigative and innovative skillset;
• Experience of working directly with clients to provide advice and guidance on investment decisions;
• Chartered engineer or equivalent, or working towards it;
• Knowledge and experience of working in wider markets, with experience of consultancy selling to external clients;
• Broad knowledge of the Defence and Aerospace markets and wider markets;
• Experience of consultancy selling and the ability to sell the capability to external clients
• Experienced in Bid management;
• Familiarisation of working with Defence Standards;
• Membership of UK, EU or US societies/working groups; and
• Production of articles, papers or conference presentations within their discipline.

This role may require security clearance and offers of employment will be dependent on obtaining the relevant level of clearance. If this is necessary it will be discussed with you at interview.
