Senior Signalling Engineering Manager

Atkins have recently been awarded the the Norwich Yarmouth Lowestoft resignalling project. This project will be implementing Alstom’s ElectroLogIXS interlocking product in one of the first implementations on Network Rail Infrastructure. Atkins are therefore seeking to recruit a driven, dynamic and innovative engineer into our Signalling Systems Practice to be our Senior Engineering Manager for the project.

Atkins has one of the UK Rail industry’s largest signalling engineering teams and as such you will be joining our Signalling Systems Practice which comprises a team of over 100 professional signalling design personnel, project engineers and engineering managers. This, together with Atkins broader cross discipline capability and our Global Design Centre, means our engineers have an unrivalled collective knowledge to tap into and learn from.


This role is that of a senior leader within the project team with responsibility for all Engineering aspects of the project. Project reporting will be to the Project Director with line reporting to the Signalling Systems Practice Manager – Delivery. This person filling this role will also be the Contractor’s Engineering Manager (CEM) for the project, and will provide leadership to all displine engineers and teams enagaged in the projects delivery.

Primary functions of the role include:

• Providing leadership to, and coordinating the efforts of the engineering teams
• Setting the safety and engineering culture for the project
• Understanding contractual requirements and communicating these to the Engineering Team
• Acting as the focal point for technical issues/co-ordination between Atkins, Sub-contractors and the Client
• Addressing and resolving scope cost changes and schedule impact issues with the Project Manager
• Ensuring achievement of safety, quality, schedule and cost objectives
• Addressing Engineering personnel performance issues
• Developing and co-ordinating Engineering subcontracts
• Leading inter disciplinary communication, activies and reviews
• Actively managing the engineering budget and supporting the project’s commercial objectives
• Assisting with project closeout and hand over of deliverables to the Client
• Supporting the collective learning of the organisation.


Essential Qualifications and Experience

• Extensive UK signalling project engineering experience
• Extensive senior leadership experience
• Experience of undertaking CEM / CRE responsibilities on Network Rail infrastructure
• Understanding of risk management, CDM and CSM

Desirable Qualifications and Experience

• Chartered Engineer
• Holds applicable IRSE Licence(s)
• Full Corporate Member of the IRSE
• Experience of introducing new equipment / systems onto the rail network

The role will require the successful candidiate to work at the combined NR / Atkins project offices at Stratford as well as spending time on site in the Norwich to Lowestoft geographical area. Travel to Atkins offices around the UK including our key design offices at Birmingham and Swindon will be a regular requirement and as such candidiates should be able to commit to any such travel commitements needed by the project duties.
