Senior Technical Lead - Transformational Transport Economics

Atkins Transportation Division covers all aspects of multidisciplinary design and management from inception to options appraisal through to detailed scheme design and delivery support. Atkins is one of the UK’s leading multi-disciplinary consultancies engaged in numerous high profile projects for Clients in both the Public and Private Sector.

Atkins’ Transportation Consultancy Practice comprises of over 900 staff delivering planning, technical and advisory consultancy services to a wide-ranging client base in the UK and overseas. We are part of a larger Transportation business of 3,750 talented professionals covering highway, rail and local transport sectors in the UK & Europe.

Our teams are currently delivering exciting and important policy, strategy, modelling and research projects throughout the transportation sector. We are at the forefront of national and international policy-making, supporting key decision makers at all levels; and are also supporting the development of cutting edge technology in the transport sector, including autonomous and connected vehicles and mobility as a service product.

With a solid pipeline of business case development work for the investment priorities of our local and national clients, and continual interest on working at the forefront of transport economics, Atkins is looking for an established transport economist who will be tasked to leading our pursuit of top level public sector transport strategy, transport appraisal and evaluation, for regional and national bodies, particularly in the field of transport investment and economic performance. This reflecting the increasing emphasis on the delivery of improved productivity, employment and housing growth, and a spatially better-balanced economy from transport infrastructure and service investments.

Our current portfolio of projects includes Crossrail 2, the Crossrail Extension to Ebbsfleet, Highways England’s Road Investment Programme, Midlands Connect Transport Strategy and Joint Spatial Plan for the West of England.
• We can create a role that suits your strengths and needs, and embed you into our team of talented individuals with experience in a wide range of areas surrounding business case development and transport economics including wider economic impacts, application of the relevant guidance and alternative assessment, and research on its evidence base.
• We offer flexible working arrangements and have strong transport planning presence in London, Birmingham, Bristol, Cambridge, Epsom, Cardiff, Leeds and Manchester, but are also open to candidates preferring alternative locations.


Responsibilities
There is significant growth within the team currently. We are looking forward to strengthening our offering in pursuing opportunities in case making for infrastructure or investment programme proposals that feature transformational impacts. Joining our expanding team, you will make the most of your quality focus and commercial brain to help our business continue to grow, by:
• sharing your insights on relevant subject matter and targeted end clients;
• influencing our strategy to deliver the aspired growth in specific technical areas;
• leading our pursuit and finding the best solutions to our clients’ challenges in improving the presence of their investment priorities on a national stage;
• formulation and promotion of best practice in relevant subject matter; and
• representation of our business during engagement with industry stakeholders and clients

Requirements
We are seeking an accomplished transport economist with recognisable successes that demonstrate:
• Expert knowledge of transport economic appraisal guidance and tools, and their practical applications in case making for transformational schemes;
• Expertise in one or more niche areas relevant to specific economic impacts from transport investment such as productivity uplift, employment effects or induced development;
• A track record of leading teams in pursuing and / or delivering high quality economics and transport planning work;
• Ability to confidently champion technical approaches with clients and key industry stakeholders;
• Knowledge and engagement with key industry stakeholders and end clients in specific subject matter; and
• Experience in leading the preparation of method statements, bids and/or client communication and marketing material.
