Atkins Transportation Division covers all aspects of multidisciplinary design and management from inception to options appraisal through to detailed scheme design and delivery support. Atkins is one of the UK’s leading multi-disciplinary consultancies engaged in numerous high profile projects for Clients in both the Public and Private Sector.

Atkins’ Transportation Consultancy Practice comprises of over 900 staff delivering planning, technical and advisory consultancy services to a wide-ranging client base in the UK and overseas. We are part of a larger Transportation business of 3,750 talented professionals covering highway, rail and local transport sectors in the UK & Europe.

We’re looking for a dynamic Senior Transport Planner to join our Practice in either Epsom or Aldershot to work across London and the South East. We’re an established successful team with a well-balanced blend of skills, and are looking for an enthusiastic individual to add further value to our offer to the marketplace.
The role is an opportunity to be engaged in technical delivery of a wide range of projects and support business development functions whilst assisting junior members of the team to ensure timely project delivery. It offers excellent career prospects to an ambitious and hard working individual who ideally has a broad background in transport planning which they now wish to expand through exposure to a wide range of clients and working on nationally recognised projects as well as more local ones.

It is expected that the role will include potential for engagement on a mixture of the following, dependant on skill set and career aspirations:
• Leading and project management of Transport Assessments and Studies.
• Feasibility, Public Realm and Corridor Studies.
• Undertaking analysis using spreadsheet and modelling software.
• Spatial Planning and development management.
• Supporting business development functions and facing clients.

It will be expected that the Senior Transport Planner will be conversant in forecasting software, census data and junction modelling software; the role will also require a willingness and ability to develop junior members of staff in the application of these tools.

The team forms part of the wider national City Spaces & Development Planning practice, offering services to both private and public-sector Clients for our offices in the UK. The overall team has a wide-ranging capability: from site feasibility and masterplanning, through to planning and then detailed design and assessment. The multi-disciplinary nature of the business also means that we are able to work as part of an in-house project team to offer clients a true ‘one stop shop’ for the planning, design and delivery of infrastructure projects.

The team has a strong pipeline and solid presence within the marketplace. Our Practice is involved in a number of high profile projects with a variety of clients both in the UK and overseas and our current portfolio of works comprises a diverse mix of local, national and international development and public realm projects. We also provide specialist input to a range of strategic rail, highways, aviation and other infrastructure projects drawn from across the business.

Key clients include Highways England, Network Rail, Hampshire County Council, Surrey County Council, LB Harrow, London City Airport, Heathrow Airport and The Crown Estate.

Requirements
Qualifications

• Appropriate academic (degree qualified in a relevant discipline), and/or professional qualifications (chartered membership, or demonstrable progress towards achieving qualification of a relevant institution).

Essential Criteria

• Previous experience in a transport planning consultancy and supporting clients through the planning process.
• Practical knowledge for successful management of development planning and/or public realm projects. considerable experience in using software packages including TRL Junctions, LinSig, TRANSYT, TRICS and census database.
• Able to develop effective and enduring relationships with internal clients and external developers, agents and architects.
• Able to exercise sound judgements in all areas, whilst under pressure of project deadlines.
• Must be able to work in a Client facing environment with good communication skills.
• Understanding of transport planning and policy and the context within which it is achieved and ability to adapt to a diverse range of transport planning projects
• People management skills with a hands-on attitude to technical project work.
• Appetite to grow business development credentials and skills in commercial aspects of project management.

Desirable Criteria
• TPP qualified, or in the process of seeking qualification.
• Experience in project management and client management.
• Microsimulation modelling (VISSIM, Paramics) competency.
• Where relevant, delivery of work in line with WebTAG and DMRB guidance.
• CAD capabilities.
• Exposure to negotiations with Highway and Planning Authorities on development led transportation issues including S106 and S278 negotiations, and Traffic Orders.

Responsibilities

• Ensure that projects are completed to client specifications, to budgets and deadlines.
• Positively contribute to the delivery of the business strategy for the company in association with senior staff.
• Provide technical delivery of development planning projects.
• Act as mentor to junior members of staff.

We seek a candidate that displays a sound awareness of the industry and demonstrable standard of technical competency to provide clients with complete confidence in our solutions, and the enthusiasm and passion to work with and assist in developing the next generation of specialists.

The ideal candidate needs to be a driven individual with strong technical acumen, a growing commercial awareness of the development planning industry and aspirations or experience in project management. The candidate will also be willing to challenge themselves to gain experience on a wide range of transport planning projects across the consultancy practice.

Atkins develops individuals through a portfolio of training and development activities designed to help you make the best of your abilities and talents. These are reviewed with individuals through an annual appraisal process. We actively support staff in achieving corporate membership of relevant institutions.

This role may require security clearance and offers of employment will be dependent on obtaining the relevant level of clearance. If this is necessary it will be discussed with you at interview.
