We are currently looking for a dynamic Senior Transport Planner to join our team in Epsom, with scope to alternatively consider forming part of a growing presence in Aldershot. The role is an opportunity to be engaged in technical delivery of a wide range of projects, support business development functions and grow project management responsibility in a supportive environment, whilst assisting junior members of the team to ensure timely and project delivery.

A Senior Transport Planner will deliver a diverse range of projects from site feasibility and masterplanning, through to planning and detailed design. It is expected that this will include:

o Leading and project management of Transport Assessments and Transport Studies for both the public and private sector clients;
o Forecasting the effects of new developments, devising strategies to cater for generated trips and undertaking analysis and assessments to support planning applications; and
o Supporting business development functions and facing clients.

The role will see successful delivery of bespoke technical and scoping notes, Transport Assessment Reports and Travel Plans suitable to support planning applications. The job will also involve providing specialist input to Environmental Impact Assessments for larger scale projects. 

It will be expected that the Senior Transport Planner will be conversant in forecasting software, census data and junction modelling software; the role will also require a willingness and ability to develop junior members of staff in the application of these tools.  Depending on past experience, may also draw upon any experience the candidate has of microsimulation modelling or design capability.  

This role will be based in Epsom but working across London and the South East; our office is located in the heart of Epsom, and a short walk from Epsom station.  

The Epsom team forms part of the wider national City Spaces & Development Planning practice, offering services to both private and public sector Clients for our offices in the UK.  The overall team has a wide-ranging capability: from site feasibility and masterplanning, through to planning and then detailed design. The multi-disciplinary nature of the business also means that we are able to deliver project teams from disciplines wider than transportation to offer clients a true ‘one stop shop.’

The team has a strong pipeline and solid presence within the marketplace.   Our Development team is involved in a number of high profile projects with a variety of clients both in the UK and overseas and our current portfolio of works comprises a diverse mix of local, national and international masterplanning, development planning and engineering projects. 

Key clients include Highways England, Hampshire County Council, Surrey County Council, The Crown Estate and St Modwen.  We are also engaged in providing specialist input to a range of strategic rail, highways, aviation and other infrastructure projects drawn from across the business.


o Appropriate academic and professional qualifications (Degree qualified in a relevant discipline and Chartered Membership of a relevant institution). Applicants should have a first degree in civil engineering or in a quantitative subject such as geography, mathematics, economics, engineering and urban planning.  

Essential Criteria

o Previous experience in a transport planning consultancy and supporting clients through all stages of the planning process;
o Practical knowledge in leading Transport Studies
o Considerable experience in using software packages including PICADY, ARCADY, LinSIG, TRANSYT, TRICS and census database.
o Able to develop effective and enduring relationships with internal clients and external developers, agents and architects;
o Able to exercise sound judgement in all areas, whilst under pressure of project deadlines;
o Must be able to work in a Client facing environment with good communication skills;
o Understanding of transport planning and policy and the context within which it is achieved and ability to adapt to a diverse range of transport planning projects;
o People management skills with a hands-on attitude to technical project work; and
o Appetite to grow business development credentials and skills in commercial aspects of project management.

Desirable Criteria

o TPP qualified, or in the process of seeking qualification;
o Experience in project management and client management;
o Modelling competency and/or design capabilities; and
o Exposure to negotiations with Highway and Planning Authorities on development led transportation issues including S106 and S278 negotiation.


o Ensure that projects are completed to client specifications, to budgets and deadlines; 
o Positively contribute to the delivery of the business strategy for the company in association with senior staff;
o Provide technical delivery of development planning projects; and
o Act as mentor to junior members of staff.

The ideal candidate needs to be a driven individual with strong technical acumen, a growing commercial awareness of the development planning industry and aspirations or experience in project management.  The candidate will also be willing to challenge themselves to gain experience on a wide range of transport planning projects across the consultancy practice.
