Atkins’ Transportation Consultancy Practice comprises 500 staff delivering planning, technical and advisory consultancy services to a wide-ranging client base in the UK and overseas. We are part of a larger Transportation business of 3,000 talented professionals covering highway, rail and local transport sectors in the UK.
Within the Consultancy Practice is the Cities Spaces & Development Planning (CS&DP) Sub-Practice, with around 120 staff delivering walking and cycling, sustainable transport, public realm and street design, development planning and wayfinding services.
In 2018 we are growing our CS&DP team in London and are looking to recruit talented individuals to the team, responsible for the delivery of travel planning and development planning projects to help us deliver and win work.
The successful candidate will have a background in transport planning with experience in working across a range of projects for multiple clients. The candidate should have a broad range of transport planning skills covering sustainable transport (especially walking and cycling), scheme planning and feasibility, development planning and travel planning as well as experience in working in multi-disciplinary teams. They should also have good project management experience and be comfortable in engaging with clients and stakeholders on transport projects.
The successful candidate will have a key role in supporting the team leader in winning, as well as delivering, work. Therefore, tender management experience is also required for this role. As the team grows, it is expected that the role will entail management of junior staff and graduates.
Some of the projects the team is currently working on include:
• Various travel planning, marketing and promotional initiatives for Local Authorities
• Bicycle hire schemes planning and promotion
• Stakeholder engagement and public consultation in support of the planning and delivery of major infrastructure projects
• Development of Transport Assessments for high profile London based major infrastructure schemes
• Development control support to Local Authorities
• Major UK town centre transport option studies.

Responsibilities
• Lead transport planning projects for a range of clients acting as project manager or task manager, with responsibility for task/project management including technical delivery, commercial project performance, quality and client relationships
• Work as part of larger project teams with responsibilities for scoping and undertaking technical transport planning tasks, interfacing with other teams/disciplines, and contributing to reporting and client and stakeholder engagement
• Work with the team leader in London to identify and secure work from local clients in line with our priorities to grow our CS&DP business. This will entail undertaking targeted business development activities, leading and contributing to tender submissions and promoting Atkins in the external market
• Work collaboratively with teams from our national CS&DP business working on projects and bids as required
• Support the team leader in managing and growing the London team.


Requirements
• Appropriate academic and professional qualifications - degree qualified in a relevant discipline (such as Geography, Urban Planning, Engineering, Transport Planning, Economics)
• At least 8 years of experience of working in a Transport Planning Consultancy, or in Central Government or a Local Authority or a combination thereof
• Market knowledge of the UK transport sector, ideally with a particular focus on London and the SE
• Excellent report writing, other written and numerical presentation skills
• Excellent communication skills
• Experience and technical competency in at least two of the following: local transport planning; travel planning; development planning; planning for pedestrians; planning for cyclists; sustainable transport; stakeholder engagement/public consultation
• Experience of developing relationships with clients and supporting work winning activity across client organisations
• Experience of building effective networks across organisations.
