Overview
Atkins’ Transportation Consultancy Practice comprises 500 staff delivering planning, technical and advisory consultancy services to a wide-ranging client base in the UK and overseas. We are part of a larger Transportation business of 3,000 talented professionals covering highway, rail and local transport sectors in the UK.

Within the Consultancy Practice is the Cities Spaces & Development Planning (CS&DP) Sub-Practice, with around 120 staff delivering walking and cycling, sustainable transport, public realm and street design and development planning. As part of our planned growth for the sector in 2018, we have a vacancy for an Assistant Transport Planner based in London focusing on providing support across a broad range of UK and overseas projects.

We are looking for an individual with an interest in transport planning and particularly public realm, pedestrian and cycle planning, with the drive to learn and progress quickly. The successful candidate will be someone keen to see their career develop with a desire to take greater ownership and responsibility for technical delivery and, in due course, management of projects. The role will involve working in the Cities and Spaces sector but will attract opportunities for involvement in a wider range of transport planning projects across our London business as part of supported career development. This role in an expanding team offers the opportunity for rapid career progression dependent on ability.

You will support on a variety of public realm, pedestrian, cycle and transport planning projects of varying scope and scale for both public and private sector clients. Some of the projects the team is currently working on include:

West End High Street Accessibility Feasibility Study
Kilburn: Walking and Cycling Improvements
Winchester Walking and Cycling Conditions Assessment
Queens Walk Pedestrian Comfort Levels Review
HS2 Buckinghamshire Road Safety Assessment
Various Cycling and Pedestrian feasibility studies
Various public realm planning studies

Responsibilities:
* Take responsibility for delivering and supporting on the delivery of technical work
* Adopt best practice and adhere to the Atkins quality processes in technical delivery on projects
* Support small project teams
* Assist in the preparation of bids and marketing.
* Pro-actively develop skills both on the job and from formal training and share knowledge with colleagues.

Requirements:

* Degree in transport, urban planning, geography, architecture or related subject.
* At least five years’ experience in transport planning, ideally with experience in pedestrian, cycling and public realm projects.
* Demonstrable technical skills and understanding of transport planning techniques and methods.
* Ability to work in a team as part of a wider project.
* Experience in a range of transport and specifically pedestrian planning techniques e.g. analysing and presenting pedestrian movement, planning of pedestrian / cycling schemes, survey techniques / strategy development.
* An appreciation of public realm planning and related policy context.
* A good basis and quickly growing competence in Adobe InDesign and Illustrator packages.
* Experience of using GIS.
