Atkins’ Transportation Consultancy Practice comprises 500 staff delivering planning, technical and advisory consultancy services to a wide-ranging client base in the UK and overseas. We are part of a larger Transportation business of 3,750 talented professionals covering highway, rail and local transport sectors in the UK. 

We are looking to make a number of senior appointments to strengthen our transport planning teams across the UK, to grow our business around the development planning, sustainable transport, travel demand management and transport strategy sectors. A background in transport planning is essential, with experience in working across a range of projects for multiple clients.

The successful candidate should have a broad range of transport planning skills covering sustainable transport (especially walking and cycling), scheme planning and feasibility, development planning and travel planning as well as experience in working in multi-disciplinary teams, along with excellent client engagement skills. The successful candidate will also have a track record in technical project delivery plus a proven capability in work winning, demonstrating commercial acumen and a dedication to delivering quality outputs and outcomes for our clients. This role is primarily project and client facing but will also support the local practice manager in growing and developing our staff and portfolio of work.

Some of the projects the team is currently working on include:
• Various travel demand management strategies and initiatives for Local Authorities
• Stakeholder engagement and public consultation in support of the planning and delivery of major infrastructure projects
• Development of Transport Assessments for high profile London based major infrastructure schemes
• Development control support to Local Authorities
• Bicycle hire schemes planning and promotion
• Major UK town centre transport option studies
• Local Transport Plan development and adoption.

Responsibilities 
• Leading and managing a portfolio of transport planning bids and projects. This comprises technical, financial and project management of projects in line with Atkins management systems and processes
• Playing a key role in work winning on a wide-range of transport planning areas including policy and strategy, travel demand management, development planning and stakeholder engagement ensuring technical excellence and a first-class product for our client
• Developing relationships with key clients and promoting Atkins, working as part of a key account management team to increase revenue from strategic clients. This will include working with the Framework Directors for our frameworks with Local Authorities to maximise opportunities
• Identifying and implementing opportunities for deploying innovative styles and techniques in project deliver
• Overseeing and assuring the financial and commercial management of projects and bids
• Supporting the team leader and practice manager in managing and growing the London team.

Requirements
• Appropriate academic and professional qualifications - degree qualified in a relevant discipline (such as Geography, Urban Planning, Engineering, Transport Planning, Economics)
• At least 8 years of experience of working in a Transport Planning Consultancy, or in Central Government or a Local Authority, or a combination thereof
• Market knowledge of the UK transport sector, ideally with a particular focus on London and the SE and able to utilise this knowledge through projects and client interaction
• Excellent report writing, other written and numerical presentation skills
• Strong track record of managing teams to successfully deliver against business objectives and targets, ideally within a consultancy environment
• Excellent communication skills to engage effectively with clients and teams across Atkins, understanding and meeting client requirements, unlocking new work and developing team performance
• Experience and technical competency in at least three of the following: local transport planning; transport policy/strategy, travel planning; development planning; planning for pedestrians; planning for cyclists; sustainable transport; stakeholder engagement/public consultation
• Experience of developing relationships with clients and successful work winning activity across client organisations
• Experience of building effective networks across organisations
