Our Transportation division is looking for a rounded Senior or Principal Transport Planner with experience of managing a team for staff located across two offices; Leeds (Thorpe Park) and central York.

The successful candidate will play a key role as a helping deliver transport planning projects for a range of public and private sector Clients including Department for Transport, Highways England, Transport for the North, and many other clients across the UK.

SNC-Lavalin’s Atkins Transportation Consultancy Practice comprises of over 900 staff delivering planning, technical and advisory consultancy services to a wide-ranging client base in the UK and overseas. We part of a larger Transportation business of 3,750 talented professionals covering highway, rail and local transport sectors in the UK & Europe.

The team in Leeds/York comprises twelve people across a range of technical disciplines and levels of seniority. Both the Leeds and York locations are shared with other SNC-Lavalin Atkins teams with approximately 250 employees across the two offices. The Transport Planning team is working across a wide range of projects in the north of England and UK wide, together with some international opportunities.

This position is ideal for a candidate seeking the opportunity to develop their people management skills and to combine this role with strong technical skills to manage and deliver projects.

You would be involved in managing performance, recruitment and the development of your team members. You will work closely with our teams in other offices across Transport Planning and support the Practice Managers in shaping the Consultancy team in the north of England.

Your technical skills will have a blend of transport modelling (strategic or micro-simulation), development planning or economic appraisal. You will have experience of leading technical delivery on projects, have some experience of managing projects and of controlling project finances, and a capability in work winning.


Team Responsibilities:
• Supporting direct reports and other junior staff through the personal development review process, individual mentoring and line general management;
• Implementation of the resource management system (RMS);
• Reporting on bidding and project delivery;
• Working closely with the Practice Manager for the north of England reporting on staff utilisation; operational needs and future planning for the transport planning team.

Technical Responsibilities:

• Working toward independent project management with responsibility for task/project management including technical delivery, commercial project performance, quality and client relationships
• Liaising with Project Managers in undertaking Feasibility Studies, Transport Assessments, Economic/Business Case, Transport Strategies for both the public and private sectors
• Using software packages such as Junctions, LinSIG, TRANSYT, TRICS and ArcGIS/TRACC, SATURN, CUBE, TUBA
• Work as part of larger project teams with responsibilities for scoping and undertaking technical transport planning tasks, interfacing with other teams / disciplines, and contributing to reporting and client and stakeholder engagement.
• Work with the Practice Manager in the north of England and wider national Transport Planning business.

Requirements
• Appropriate academic and professional qualifications - degree qualified in a relevant discipline (such as Geography, Urban Planning, Engineering, Transport Planning, Mathematics, Economics).
• Experience of working in a Transport Planning Consultancy, Central Government or a Local Authority.
• Excellent report writing, other written and numerical presentation skills.
• Excellent communication skills to engage effectively with teams across Atkins, unlocking new work and developing team performance.
