Atkins have recently enjoyed several major projects wins including Cornwall Capacity Enhancement, Norwich Yarmouth Lowestoft resignalling and Shepperton resignalling projects.

Atkins are therefore seeking to recruit an ambitious, enthusiastic and conscientious graduate engineer into our Signalling Systems Practice to be a signalling designer and / or project engineer.

Atkins has one of the UK Rail industry’s largest signalling engineering teams and as such you will be joining our Signalling & Transport Systems Practice which comprises a team of over 200 professional signalling and communication design personnel, project engineers and engineering managers. This, together with Atkins broader cross discipline capability and our Global Design Centre, means our engineers have an unrivalled collective knowledge to tap into and learn from.

As an Engineer at Atkins you will get the opportunity to work on projects at all stages of development from early feasibility through to detailed design and implementation.

ROLE

This role is that of a signalling designer and / or signalling project engineer reporting to a Signalling Design Manager or Engineering Manager.

Primary functions include:

• Preparation and production of railway signalling designs, specifications and reports ensuring compliance with all contractual and statutory requirements within agreed timescales and performance parameters
• Supporting major project delivery through activities such as; correlation, signal sighting, preparation of H&S Files, undertaking Assistant Testing duties during commissioning periods
• Project managing / engineering lead for small packages of work
• Assisting in the preparation of estimates and producing tender documentation
• Working within a records / document management system
• Technical liaison with other Atkins departments and externally with the client
• Undertaking design office / commissioning cover (out of office hours)

REQUIREMENTS

Essential Qualifications and Experience

• Degree at 2:2 or above preferable electrical or electronic
• Degree in a relevant engineering discipline
• Demonstrable path to achieving Chartered Engineer Status
• Knowledge and experience of signalling

Desirable Qualifications and Experience

• Undertaken a structured training programme in signal engineering
• Holds an IRSE Licence(s)
• 2-5 years post graduate experience of working within the railway signalling environment
• Experience of working within a design and / or project engineering environment
• Experience of using appropriate industry standard CAD packages
• Knowledge of signalling equipment and systems, particularly electronic systems
• Working towards / passed IRSE Examination
• Project/package management experience

• Proactive in identifying and solving problems
• Willing and able to learn and grab new opportunities and responsibilities
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Can do attitude and flexible
• Able to work within a team, but also be self motivating
• Fit and able to work trackside / hold PTS
• Ability to manage time efficiently and prioritise duties
• Comfortable with undertaking commercial, technical and project management aspects of rail signalling delivery

LOCATION

With offices in Glasgow, York, Croydon, Swindon and Birmingham we offer flexibility in location.


The role will be office based, but the candidate will be required to work at other project sites / offices.


This role may require security clearance and offers of employment will be dependent on obtaining the relevant level of clearance. If this is necessary it will be discussed with you at interview.
