The role

We support the Overhead Electrification business (OLE) via our, industry recognised, in-house developed CAD/CAE tools TADPOLE (Tools Aiding Design and Production of Overhead Line Electrification). To build on our success in this area, we have an exciting opportunity for a keen Software Engineer to join our offices in Derby and continue the development of TADPOLE within, an applied engineering environment.
Atkins is one of the world's leading rail engineers. Its rail business is the largest in its field in Europe.

We undertake projects from feasibility through to detailed design and construction management. Our engineers are skilled in the design of OLE projects, Layout Plans, Cross sections, Switching cross sections, Section Diagrams and Bonding plans.
We have committed forward workload and a strategy to achieve growth through expanding our existing client base to provide consultancy services including outline design, detailed design, and consultancy advice.

Responsibilities

• Work as part of a small agile software development team to produce technical work, as directed by the Project Manager and the OLE Software Team Leader
• Ensure that software developed is tested, validated and documented.
• Identify with overall OLE project and practice goals and help to achieve them.
• Communicate effectively and build positive relationships with colleagues and clients
• Maintain and demonstrate strong technical competence; find new and better ways of carrying out your role.
• Help identify new software development opportunities.

Requirements

• Degree (or equivalent) in Engineering or Computer Science
• Proficient within C#, .NET, VBA or other modern programming language (i.e. Java, Python)
• Willingness to support and maintain an existing Microsoft VBA codebase and tools.
• Enthusiastic, pro-active approach with high attention to detail.
• Commitment to software engineering best practices.
• No prior rail experience necessary.

Desirable

• Knowledge of Bentley Microstation API or .NET Interop’s.
• Experience of 3D graphics programming or mathematics.
• Previous experience of Agile software development practices.

Provided you have appropriate programming competence, Atkins will support you in learning any additional software tools as required.

We are inviting applications from new graduates, as well as candidates with two years’ experience within industry.

This role may require security clearance and offers of employment will be dependent on obtaining the relevant level of clearance. If this is necessary it will be discussed with you at interview.
