Atkins seeks an energetic and highly motivated self-starter to join our team in Tampa, FL as a Structures Team Leader.


Under general direction, provides technical expertise within the structural engineering field related to bridge and other transportation structures for highway vehicular, rail and transit facilities.

Provides expertise for diverse structural engineering activities throughout the area of responsibility, nationally, and/or company-wide.

May function as project manager, lead engineer and/or technical consultant.

Upholds engineering ethics and standards of conduct.

Provides leadership, direction and guidance to the structures team to enhance the capabilities of the team.

Mentors staff to achieve higher levels of success within the organization and the industry.

Responsible for achieving growth, financial success, quality, client satisfaction, and team performance and engagement goals.

Coordinates with the regional business units and business development and sales units, to identify and strategize project pursuits, and coordinate resource requirements for proposals and engineering product production.

Reports to National Technical Director.


Manages the staff, operations, and business development coordination activities of a bridge structural engineering team.

Work involves coordination, research and problem solving on a variety of engineering projects which may include unique and/or controversial issues, the solution of which has an important effect on major organization programs.

Manages project production within a technical practice center.

Typically responsible for annual revenues over $2M and over 15 staff.


Bachelor's degree in field of practice. Post graduate degree preferred.

Management coursework and/or MBA a plus.

This level may be achieved by technical professionals or technical managers with 15 years of experience since B.S., with at least three of these years in positions with project management or supervisory responsibilities.


Strong technical writing and communications skills, proven through technical proposal development, technical presentations, technical papers and/or participation in technical committees.

Excellent technical and interpersonal skills.

Proven ability to manage an engineering team and provide leadership to local and/or regional staff.

Highly skilled at promoting the firm and negotiating advantageous contract terms.

Must have business vision, excellent communication skills, and be able to represent the firm effectively to clients, key public officials, and the community in general.


Florida P.E. license in field of practice is required. Registration in additional states is desired.


Strongly preferred: Design/Build Experience in a leadership position.

Strongly preferred: Experience with design of segmental concrete structures, other continuous concrete structures, (e.g., straight or curved spliced concrete girders, post-tensioned or conventionally reinforced multi- or single cell concrete boxes, etc.), and steel plate and/or steel box structures.

Structures may include highway, railroad, pedestrian or transit bridges.

Preferred: Experience with design of steel and/or concrete complex structures with spans exceeding 400 feet.
