Team Leader

The newly reshaped Transportation Engineering Practice is in an exciting period of growth and with growth comes opportunity! This forward-thinking community is looking for individuals to join them cross the UK, as part of the national Early Careers Practice. The role provides a unique opportunity for personal development earlier on in your career that might not be possible elsewhere. We are looking for dynamic, enthusiastic individuals that are looking to make a difference to how things are done across the business, enrich the early careers experience for people within their team and gain exposure across a variety of projects. We see this role as a step in your career, that will enable you to grow and learn for the benefit of both yourself and the business.

The Early Careers Practice consists of Graduates and Apprentices, typically in the first four to six years of their careers. The structure of the practice is designed to focus on the development of team members, simplify mobility/opportunities to work on a range of projects and provide a consistent experience for each community.  We are looking for dynamic and enthusiastic Team Leaders to manage teams of ~ 8 graduates, apprentices and placement students across our 5 key regions of Scotland and NI, North, Midlands, West and Wales and the South East.

The Individual

We are seeking proactive individuals who have a strong interest in developing others, and enthusiasm to motivate their team to do their best. Excellent communication skills are critical for managing a team based in different geographical locations and essential for building links with resourcing managers from different parts of the business.

A flexible approach will need to be adopted, with the selected candidate expected to be based in one of the regional offices but be open to travel as required.  The work commitment for team leader activities is anticipated to be up to one day a week and be undertaken alongside regular project work so the individual can continue to develop their portfolio of project experience alongside developing an understanding for operational business management.

Responsibilities

Management

  • Line Manager responsibilities including
    • Cascading essential business communications to the team
    • Ensuring timesheet compliance of team members, approving time where required
    • Reviewing and approving annual leave and MyIT requests
  • Business Operations
    • Ensuring team members are working towards productivity targets
    • Tracking and monitoring team workload and reporting on resource availability
    • Identifying and developing resourcing opportunities for Early Careers team members
  • Complying with and championing company processes and policies, and ensuring adherence to safety, welfare, quality and environmental requirements.
  • Assisting with staff recruitment, developing and mentoring others to maximise individual/team performance, undertaking performance reviews, and creating diverse teams.

People

  • Motivating individuals and teams to be effective, efficient, economic and creative.
  • Managing team members development including PDRs and completion of mandatory training modules in a timely manner.
  • Mapping project opportunities to development needs of the team balanced against ensuring efficient delivery of services and maximising resource utilisation.
  • Discuss, review and approve training requests as necessary
  • Act as first point of contact for team member concerns, escalating to Practice Managers and the HR team where appropriate

Requirements

Essential:

  • An understanding of Professional Accreditation Routes with a Professional Institution.
  • Effective communication with others with the proven ability to coach and develop team members, including formal performance development methodologies.
  • Knowledge of the markets the Transportation Business operates in and current business priorities
  • Proven ability to build teams, creating an environment to motivate individuals and ensure effective teamwork.

Desirable:

  • Knowledge of business policies, quality and environmental management systems, project governance procedures and financial control systems to team management (RMS, CRM, productivity reporting)
  • Experience of developing, mentoring and supporting other staff through other schemes such as ICE delegated engineer, or staff forum representative.

This role may require security clearance and offers of employment will be dependent on obtaining the relevant level of clearance. If this is necessary, it will be discussed with you at interview.
