The Atkins Infrastructure business is looking to appoint an experienced and dynamic Technical Director to lead some of our key geotechnical work in the energy sector and to provide wider technical leadership for project teams that deliver complex soil-structure interaction analysis problems across a wide range of other sectors.
As a Technical Director you would also be part of the senior leadership team contributing to the development of technical strategy across our Ground Engineering Practice. Candidates must have experience of delivering innovative geotechnical solutions within the energy sector and for foundations, earthworks and retaining walls.

Atkins has an impressive current portfolio of prestigious geotechnical projects in the UK and internationally. We need to increase our resources to meet the growing demands from our clients, especially in the energy sector, which includes carbon capture & storage, renewable energy (wind, current and hydro-power), low carbon engineering, offshore and onshore oil & gas and nuclear power.

We have offices throughout the UK and depending on the particular skillset and experience of the applicant we may consider locating the role in one of several of our UK hub offices.
Requirements
The successful applicant will be a technical director level geotechnical engineer with a proven strong technical and project delivery track record.
Excellent technical skills are required relevant to our work in the energy sector. The applicant will be able to demonstrate the experience and ability to act at a national level as one of the leading practitioners in the industry.
Candidates should be able to demonstrate good commercial skills that will help us develop and expand our energy geotechnical capability in the renewable, oil & gas and nuclear sectors by building on our existing portfolio and through proactive business development of new work streams.
Candidates should have:
- A strong academic background with a relevant degree (ideally MSc or equivalent)
- Chartered status
- Proven experience of acting at director practitioner level in a fast-moving engineering consultancy environment
- Excellent interpersonal and technical skills and the ability to develop and lead geotechnical design teams
- Excellent communication skills and confidence to liaise with clients
- Good commercial track record in negotiating and running successful jobs
- Excellent report writing skills with the ability to self-check and produce accurate work
- A flair for digital and innovation
- A willingness to travel on short assignments both within the UK and overseas
- Candidates would require a driving licence
Experience of geotechnical work in the energy sector for this senior role is desirable but not essential if the key transferrable skills can be demonstrated.
