This role is based out of the CANDU Energy Inc. home office in Mississauga, Ontario.

Reporting to the Director of Reactor Components and Mechanical Engineering Division, the Technical Engineering Manager – Reactor Components (Services Projects) will be assigned to work on services projects (e.g., fitness for service evaluations of CANDU reactor core components) and will laterally collaborate with Project Managers (PM) assigned to these small-scale projects.

Technical Engineering Manager – Reactor Components (Services Projects) will be responsible for all aspects of engineering, as it relates to operating CANDU units design updates (excluding retube and refurbishment projects) and fitness for service evaluations of their core components for the assigned project.

Location: Mississauga, ON.

Your role within the team:

Technical Engineering Manager – Reactor Components (Services Projects) will have the following responsibilities:

  • Providing technical leadership in Fitness for Service Assessment of CANDU reactor core components and design updates to operating CANDU units (excluding retube and refurbishment projects).
  • Providing technical expertise on code and standard requirements such as CSA N285 and ASME Section III Division 1 pressure boundary requirements.
  • Responsible for developing project scope and deliverable definition in compliance with the governing contract documents, quality requirements for the project and any additional customer requirements.
  • Assisting in the preparation of proposals in support of the engineering scope on the project.
  • Making decision/recommendation with respect to resourcing requirements on the project and work with the relevant functional managers who will assign the engineering resources.
  • Ensuring that an appropriate combination of skills and experience is maintained within the project to be able to provide technical management and specialized expertise as required to support the project.
  • Supporting functional managers in mentoring, training, developing, motivating, coaching, and evaluating the performance of the staff.
  • Working with the PM to plan the work, ensuring resource availability and allocation, assigning tasks and progress reporting against deliverables.
  • Ensuring that the activities are executed in accordance with the specified requirements including review and endorsement of the technical content of the deliverables, verification and ensuring a high-quality of deliverables, on-time and within budget delivery of the deliverables, and approval of the deliverables.
  • Reviewing and approving project related documents/drawings and ensure technical work meets the QA program and project requirements.
  • Ensuring that all project activities are performed in accordance with applicable codes and standards and company quality assurance manual.
  • Interfacing with internal and external customers and stakeholders to establish the priorities and ensure leads and staff are working on the prioritized scope of work.
  • Providing strong leadership within the technical team, and within the company for aspects related to Fitness for Service Assessment of Candu reactor core components and design updates to operating Candu units (excluding retube and refurbishment projects).
  • Interfacing with the national regulatory bodies (CNSC and TSSA) and international regulatory bodies such as KINS ISCIR, CNCAN etc.
  • Developing and maintaining relationships with clients, partners, suppliers, and project stakeholders.
  • Raising scope changes (either requested by the client or discovered internally due to technical findings) and critical issues to the PM, Director of the Reactor Division and relevant functional managers.
  • Lead assigned engineers to find solutions for the technical issues.  If needed, engage additional help from Functional Engineering to seek issue resolution.
  • Foster a good working relationship with staff, and managers in the Reactor Components and Mechanical Engineering Divisions as well as other Divisions.
  • Providing technical staff with clear expectations and performance measures, meaningful feedback, and recognizing and rewarding achievements.
  • Providing feedback and recommendation regarding technical staff performance to functional home.
  • Make decisions/recommendations on human resource issues and effectively manage and resolve work performance problems as they relate to the project.

The ideal candidate:

  • University bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent, with a minimum of 10 years technical experience in the Candu Reactor field.
  • Knowledgeable of CANDU reactor components and systems and how their degradation mechanisms are assessed to demonstrate fitness for service including design registration updates.
  • Demonstrated skills in the management/lead of technical projects, and Supervision of a highly technical group in reactor components FFS assessment and design updates to operating units to accomplish the assigned project goals.
  • Demonstrated people skills to interact with external clients and organizations.
  • Ability to resolve technical issues.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, and presentation skills.
  • Understanding of quality assurance manuals and procedures.
  • Knowledge of reconciliation and registration processes is preferred.
  • Experience in stress analysis and FEA methods.
  • Familiarity with CSA N285/ASME Section III pressure boundary design.
  • Qualification in ASME III appendix XXIII is preferred.
  • Knowledge of finite element analysis techniques and codes such as ANSYS, LS-DYNA, PIPESTRESS, and GTSTRUDL would be beneficial.
  • Professional Engineer in the Province of Ontario (or eligible for registration).
  • Good time management skills.
  • Willing to visit project site to meet project and operational needs.
