We are seeking a Technical Project Manager with a strong background in Mechanical Engineering to join our Energy team in Derby.

The Role

As part of our Energy business you will lead the delivery of Atkins technical projects and programmes, with accountability for the complete project life cycle; from developing project proposals through project execution and project completion, to the subsequent identification and growth of future business opportunities.

The role will entail a broad range of both client and internal Atkins business interactions. Through your role as a project manager you will have the opportunity to lead multidisciplinary technical teams engaged in a range of consulting activities on behalf of our clients.

Working closely with our clients, you will capture project requirements. Subsequently working with Atkins teams you will be responsible for the development of plans, bids and solutions to meet these needs. You will proactively manage all aspects of projects delivery, including forecasting, control, change management, risk management and reporting on project progress. You will be accountable for instilling client confidence in Atkins’ project delivery through your professionalism and care.

Other key aspects of the role include working with line managers to secure and develop resources required to deliver tasks, and initiating and managing projects in line with Atkins internal Business Management System processes. You will support the development, implementation and sharing of best practice for project management. You will also support our operational management through project financial planning & reporting, resourcing and management of cash flow within projects.

The Team

The Derby Energy team’s work supports a number of key nuclear programmes including the UK Submarine programme (both in-service and next generation vessels, as well as dockyard equipment and facilities) and high integrity structures for new nuclear establishments. We also deliver work to the wider Energy industry, making use of our strong design and analytical skills to deliver projects for other internal or external clients. The Person

During your early career you will have developed a strong foundation in Mechanical Engineering. You will have excellent communication, listening, stakeholder management and influencing skills, and will be able to manage client relationships, engage constructively with multiple stakeholders and lead delivery teams. You’re confident, having dealt with complex client interactions, and motivated, with a desire to be challenged and to contribute to the success of the business. You have a responsible attitude towards safety and security.

Your experience will be throughout the complete project lifecycle. You’ll have direct experience of applying a range of project management principles and skills to deliver successful project outcomes, with specific examples of managing complex technical challenges, and, direct accountability for quality, time, cost and technical performance of engineering projects.

You will be able to demonstrate the following:
  • Degree qualified in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline. 
The following additional requirements are desirable:
  • Chartered Engineer, or in the advanced stages of working towards this.
  • Hold a professional project or programme management related qualification.
  • Nuclear sector experience including mechanical design and analysis.
  • Delivery of complex technical consultancy projects and services.
Although the team is based in Derby, the wider Energy business has locations around the country, and opportunities also exist at various client sites. Flexibility on work location and a willingness to undertake secondments to other sites is beneficial.
