Atkins has been providing infrastructure planning, engineering, construction, environmental consulting, urban planning, architecture, and program management services to public and private clients across the United States for more than 50 years.

Atkins seeks an energetic and highly motivated self-starter to join our Vestavia Hills, AL Transportation Planning Group as a Traffic Engineer II. 



MAJOR FUNCTION/ROLE:

  • Under supervision, applies technical professional proficiency to the investigation of traffic and transportation engineering problems, the coordination of project activities, and the preparation of preliminary plans and documents.
 
  • On design assignments, progresses toward learning how to clearly convey the design intent through engineering drawings and specifications.
 
  • On engineering and planning assignments, continues to develop a knowledge of the fundamentals of engineering processes and to apply them successfully to operating systems.
 
  • Upholds engineering ethics and standards of conduct.

JOB DUTIES:

Performs work which involves conventional types of plans, investigations, surveys, structures or equipment, to carry out diversified engineering projects or phases of a single project with relatively few complex features and requiring the use of analysis, interpretation, and deductive reasoning. Generally, applies standard engineering techniques, procedures and criteria in carrying out a sequence of somewhat diversified tasks requiring the use of analysis, interpretation, and deductive reasoning. Will assist with work that involves conventional transportation and traffic engineering practice.


Primary responsibilities would include, but are not limited to, those stated below:


• Have or be willing to obtain IMSA Traffic Signal Technician Field Level II certification.


• Perform traffic signal field inventories.

• Perform field reviews of project study area.

• Perform traffic simulation and capacity analysis.


• Develop project level traffic forecasts.

• Perform transportation planning duties.

• Supporting with the preparation of written reports and presentations of project findings.



EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

B.S. or M.S. in Engineering. This level may be achieved by Engineers with 2 years' experience since B.S. or 1 year since M.S. The typical incumbent has 3 to 5 years' experience since Bachelor's degree.
 
 
SPECIAL SKILLS:
 
  • Technical writing, computer and communications skills required. CAD skills preferred.

  • Preference will be given to candidates that are familiar with and/or have experience with traffic analysis software (TransModeler, Synchro, HCS, Sidra, VISSIM, CORSIM, etc).
 
PROFESSIONAL REGISTRATIONS:
EI or EIT Required
