Traffic Operations Center (TOC) Assistant Traffic Specialist

Your next calling:

As the Assistant Traffic Specialist, you will have the opportunity to monitor the roadways including detecting, confirming, responding to, and updating scheduled and unscheduled traffic incidents, congestion and monitoring of the Express Lanes on the Northwest Corridor and South Metro Managed Lanes Projects.
The Assistant Traffic Specialist is the eyes and ears of detection and management of all activities that occur in the Express Lanes. The successful candidate in this position will work in a new "state of the art" Traffic Management Center owned by the Georgia Department of Transportation and operated by Atkins staff. 

 

Atkins is currently seeking energetic, highly motivated, detail-oriented, self-starters to join our Atlanta TMC staff as a full-time Assistant Traffic Specialist in our Traffic Management Center.

Candidates interested must be able to work one of the following schedules:
 
10 hour shift – 10:00 AM – 8:30 PM   (Wednesday/Thursday/Sunday)  off days
 
10 hour shift – 10:30 – 8:30 PM  (Monday/Tuesday/Saturday) off days
 
10 hour shift -  (Flex Day or Evening Shift)  scheduled will be determined monthly based on need  
 
10 hour shift  - (Flex Night Shift) – scheduled will be determined monthly based on need
 
TMC Schedule Super Mix – Work 6:00AM – 8:30 PM every Saturday & Sunday and you can pick the other 12 hour day –  (with 4 days off  - those days can be consecutive or not)  Operator’s choice
 

 
Functions key to success:
  • Detects and responds to traffic management data information from multiple real-time sources such as alarms, traffic flow maps, closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras, video display wall, police radio scanners, phone calls, and other sources;
  • Verifies and classifies traffic events such as congestion, incidents, special events, construction, and device malfunctions using CCTV and coordination with other personnel
  • Views, creates, modifies, and enables response plans when traffic event is detected. Evaluates and responds to major incidents in the Managed Lanes by determining lanes blocked, injuries, fatalities, hazmat spills, and estimated incident duration;
  • Operates pan-tilt-zoom cameras and scans multiple monitors. Activates and changes Dynamic Message Signs (DMS) to include traveler information and to notify travelers of traffic events;
  • Detects and verifies field device failures. Responds to device failure, including actions such as acknowledgement of alarm, viewing and evaluating device, determining location, attempting reset, classifying alarm, recording type, and providing and escalating notification to the TMC manager and field maintenance technicians;
  • Updates traffic information on the 511 website;
  • Manages and operates the reversible Managed Lane systems;
  • Communicates with the Traffic Operations Manager, and interagency traffic management personnel (including local emergency responder personnel about traffic management and traffic events;
  • Coordinates with and dispatches the Hero Master Operators, interagency traffic management personnel (such as other TMC operators ), First Responders, emergency personnel, and other private providers) during confirmed incidents, emergencies, weather events, and special events;
  • Works with SRTA Operators during managed lane reversals to effectively manage the toll operations;
Performs other job-related duties as assigned

What you need to bring to the table:

If you have a High School diploma or GED, you are half way there with the needed abilities for this position. Have you worked in the transportation, public safety, or commercial operations environment? If the answer is yes, you can check off another box. We also prefer some dispatching experience but this is not required. With success comes a high level of professionalism. We already know you possess the following qualities, but we just wanted to remind you of what’s important to Atkins:

Finally, in a technology driven world, it’s important to know your way around a computer. For this role, it will be important to have a demonstrated knowledge of the following:


• Must be able to demonstrate computer skills proficiency, especially with respect to Microsoft Office and other PC based programs;
• Ability to navigate Google maps, Waze, and other mapping tools;
• Prior experience with Reversible Lane Software is a +plus (Preferably Cameleon or RACS);



Flexibility:
 
• The successful candidates must be willing and able to work Nights
• Must be able to work 10 hour shifts

 

 
 


 
 
Education & Experience:
 
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Must complete 90 day TOC (Traffic Operation Center) training
  • 6 months related experience in dispatch center or 911 operations or comparable experience required
  • Experience in a position involving public contact and telephone responsibilities preferred
  • Must be proficient with computer skills
