Job Summary

Our Transportation division is looking for a rounded Senior Transport Planner to play a key role in the delivery of transport planning projects for a range of public and private sector Clients in London and the south of England including Department for Transport, Highways England, Transport for London, Heathrow Airport, The Crown Estate, Hampshire County Council, Surrey County Council, Portsmouth City Council and many other local authorities.
We have expanded our office base in region and the role can be located in Epsom, Croydon or Aldershot offices, and will also involve travel to the Atkins’ Hub offices in London where projects are being delivered from, or support services undertaken.

The UK transport sector is experiencing unprecedented levels of investment and Atkins is playing lead roles in projects such as high speed rail, designing major new road schemes and upgrading our existing road and rail networks to deliver future demand. Our consultants are working with a range of clients to develop integrated transport strategies to ensure the urban areas we live in continue to work. Atkins’ Transportation Consultancy Practice comprises circa 900 staff delivering planning, technical and advisory consultancy services to a wide-ranging client base in the UK and overseas. We are part of a larger Transportation business of circa 3,750 talented professionals covering highway, rail and local transport sectors in the UK.
Within the Consultancy Practice is the Transport Planning sub-Practice of circa 300 staff, delivering a wide range of projects for public and private sector clients. In 2018 we are growing our Transport Planning sub-Practice and are looking to recruit talented individuals responsible for the delivery of transport planning projects to help us deliver and win work.

The successful candidate will have a background in transport planning with experience in working across a range of projects for multiple clients. The candidate should have a broad range of transport planning skills and specific technical focus in one or more areas covering strategic transport planning and policy, feasibility studies, business case development, sustainable transport and development planning as well as experience in working in multi-disciplinary teams.

The successful candidate will have a key role in supporting the team leader in winning as well as delivering work. The role is an opportunity to be engaged in technical delivery of a wide range of projects, support business development functions and embrace project management responsibility, whilst assisting junior members of the team.
Some of the projects the Transport Planning Sub-Practice is currently working on include:
• Business Case development for transport infrastructure schemes for Local Authorities
• Major UK Town centre multi modal planning, feasibility and design studies
• Stakeholder Engagement and Public Consultation in support of the planning and delivery of major infrastructure projects
• Development of Transport Assessments for high profile major infrastructure schemes
• Development control support to Highways England and Local Authority clients.

Responsibilities
• Working toward independent project management with responsibility for task/project management including technical delivery, commercial project performance, quality and client relationships
• Liaising with Project Managers in undertaking e.g. Feasibility Studies, Transport Assessments, Economic/Business Case, Transport Strategies for both the public and private sectors
• Designing and analysing surveys to obtain data for a wide range of travel activities and forecasting the effects of new developments and devising strategies to cater for generated trips
• Using software packages such as Junctions, LinSIG, TRANSYT, TRICS and ArcGIS/TRACC
• Work as part of larger project teams with responsibilities for scoping and undertaking technical transport planning tasks, interfacing with other teams / disciplines, and contributing to reporting and client and stakeholder engagement.
• Work with the Team Leader in Epsom and wider national Transport Planning business.


Essential criteria
• Proven track record in applying a range of relevant analytical techniques to meet varying project requirements on a diverse range of projects including experience using analytical and research tools such as databases;
• Experience in project management and client management
• Able to develop effective and enduring relationships with internal clients and external developers, agents and architects;
• Able to exercise sound judgements in all areas, whilst under pressure of project deadlines;
• Must be able to work in a Client facing environment with good communication skills;
• Solid capability in applying appraisal techniques, tools and guidance
• Acumen in developing appropriate solutions to project challenges and enthusiasm for innovation
• Excellent analytical, numeracy and problem-solving skills
• The ability to work effectively within a team
• Good organisational, time and budget management skills
• Dynamic, enthusiastic, proactive and passionate about transportation.

Requirements
• Appropriate academic qualifications - degree qualified in a relevant discipline (such as Geography, Urban Planning, Engineering, Transport Planning, Economics)
• Professional qualifications - Chartered or working towards membership, of a relevant institution,
• Market knowledge of the UK transport sector, ideally with a particular focus in London and the South East.
• Excellent report writing, other written and numerical presentation skills.
• Excellent communication skills.
• Experience and technical competency in at least two of the following: local transport planning; transport business case development, multi modal transport feasibility studies; development planning; transport strategies; travel planning.
• Experience of developing relationships with clients and supporting work winning activity across client organisations.
• Experience of building effective networks across organisations.
