Job Description

Atkins’ Transportation Consultancy Practice comprises circa 900 staff delivering planning, technical and advisory consultancy services to a wide-ranging client base in the UK and overseas. We are part of a larger Transportation business of circa 3,750 talented professionals covering highway, rail and local transport sectors in the UK.

Within the Consultancy Practice is the Transport Planning sub-Practice of circa 300 staff, delivering a wide range of projects for public and private sector clients. In 2018 we are growing our Transport Planning sub-Practice and are looking to recruit talented individuals responsible for the delivery of transport planning projects to help us deliver and win work.

Our Transport Planning business provides advisory services to transportation clients in traffic modelling, scheme appraisal, design, development planning and transport policy. The team has a strong pipeline and solid presence within the marketplace, with a portfolio of works covering a diverse mix of local, national and international development and public realm projects. We also provide specialist input to a range of strategic rail, environmental highways, aviation and other infrastructure projects drawn from across the business. Key clients include Highways England, Network Rail, Hampshire County Council, Surrey County Council, LB Harrow, London City Airport, Heathrow Airport and The Crown Estate.

We have a growth plan to respond to this pipeline, and are expanding the physical presence of our Transport Planning Practice in the region; in additional to our long-term home in Epsom, we have also established our presence in other South East locations, notably Aldershot and Croydon. It’s an exciting time to join, and we welcome ambitious candidates to support in realising this growth plan.

A vacancy exists for Consultant Transport Planners with any combination of modelling, economics, planning, strategy and design expertise to work in our transport planning team based in Croydon. The position will involve working on a range of highway and/or transport planning projects for a wide range of clients. The role may also provide opportunities to work on rail and environmental projects being led by other practices within Atkins.

Responsibilities

You will work on a variety of transport planning projects. You will be responsible for:

• Development and checking of deliverables, reports and analyses, ensuring quality requirements and delivery to timescales are both satisfied.
• Providing supervision and guidance to junior team members
• Development of project tasks, and the development of tools and processes, in collaboration with task or project manager, to assist in efficient project delivery.
• Carrying out task and project management responsibilities under delegated authority from more senior colleagues.


Requirements

Essential
• Degree in relevant subject

Any combination of the following experience:

• Strategic modelling software packages such as SATURN, EMME/2 and VISUM.
• Use of DIADEM
• Micro-simulation modelling using software such as VISSIM and PARAMICS
• Operational modelling using software such as TRANSYT, ARCADY, LINSIG, PICADY.
• Development and application of transport demand models in line with WebTAG and Transport for London traffic modelling guidelines.
• Economic evaluation of transport schemes using COBA and/or TUBA
• Up to date knowledge and application of current national, regional and local policies
• Review and advisory to local authorities on local plans and transport strategies
• Project team member on design projects – from small to large scale public realm/traffic engineering projects
• Working a transport planner or a transport planning lead on rail and / or environmental projects
• Use of MapInfo and in the application of GIS techniques to support transport planning assignments

Desirable
• Working towards a professional qualification with bodies such as the ICE, CIHT and TPS.
