Join our transportation team and you’ll help us to take on technically challenging engineering projects from HS2 to smart motorway schemes. You’ll develop industry skills that are highly sought after and learn to become a future business leader.

Summer: Croydon
Industrial Year: Croydon and Derby

What you’ll be doing
As a Mechanical or Electrical Engineering placement student you’ll be joining one of the following locations/teams:


Croydon

 Electrical systems (Energy Systems)
Our electrical engineers specialise in AC and DC high voltage design for the railway overhead line and third rail applications. The team also has a strong capability in Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) design and electrical systems modelling. The team also accept undergraduates from a physics background, building services or power systems.

M&E Systems (Energy Systems)
Our team are mainly electrical engineers with a small number of mechanical/public health specialists. Their focus is low voltage rail infrastructure related power supply design to support railway signalling, stations and points heating installations with some lighting capability.

Derby
Overhead Line (OLE) Systems (Energy Systems)
Our overhead line equipment team is predominately made up of mechanical engineers that provide design solutions for the structural and mechanical aspects of 25Kv AC Railway Electrification. They have capability from first principle system design through to volume output allocation design, including site design and installation support.

Rail Vehicles (Rail Consultancy)
Our Rail Vehicle Consultancy provides engineering and management expertise to rail vehicle owners, operators, maintainers, manufactures and regulators of rolling stock. The team has knowledge and experience of traction and rolling stock ranging from technical skills in design, construction and maintenance to strategic and project management.

You will:
• Develop your skills working on a variety of projects, providing technical solutions
• Become familiar with infrastructure terms and processes, across a wide range of disciplines
• Prepare and check project designs, drawings, assessment calculations, reports and contract documents
• Become a trusted adviser to our clients, working collaboratively with suppliers, contractors, the public and multidisciplinary teams

Who we’re looking for
Undergraduates on track to achieve a bachelor’s (2.1 or above) or masters (2.2 or above) degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Control Systems Engineering or Power Systems Engineering.

We also require:
• Confidence working on your own initiative and as part of multidisciplinary teams
• A good communicator who can analyse problems, create innovative solutions and manage your time effectively
• A flexible approach to travel as our projects and training may take you to a variety of locations in the UK
• Prepared to undergo a medical assessment, as some roles may involve working on site
