Robyn Williams, Apprentice, Atkins

Apprentice

Business area: Transportation
What qualification are you studying towards?: Bachelor of Engineering (Civil)

What made you decide to pursue an apprenticeship?

An apprenticeship was never really an option for me. I have always thrived academically and intended on going to University full time. After gaining offers for 5 top Universities, I stumbled across an advert for the “Atkins Apprentice Programme” while shopping for shoes online (do not ask how that happened!). After researching a little more on the programme, it intrigued me how I had not thought of an apprenticeship before. Being a young parent, was challenging enough without the stress of being a full-time student. What Atkins were offering suited me impeccably. I work 4 days in the office and attend University 1 day a week. I work with remarkable people who inspire me daily. My team are so enthusiastic to teach me all that I need and all that they know, as well as supporting me in my studies.

What is the most important thing you have learnt from your apprenticeship to date?

Despite what you hear, an apprenticeship isn’t just making 200 cups of tea a day. It is learning new things, being part of an outstanding team and working on diverse projects every day.

What are you most proud of achieving?

ICE Quest Technician Scholarship 2016. QUEST scholarships are a sign of excellence. Receiving one of the 4 scholarships available in Wales means I was recognised for my abilities and potential, as well as receiving £1,500 to support my studies. As well as being on a further/higher education course, I was working towards my ICE Technician membership and the scholarship looks great on my EngTech Application and CV. The scholarship inspired me to get involved with the ICE more, and as well as an active member, I am now the social secretary of the ICE Cymru Graduate and Students Group.

What advice would you give to someone considering applying for an apprenticeship?

Do it, do not hesitate! Why would you not choose to earn while learn if given the right opportunity? From being a school leaver to being a part of a globally successful company with remarkable opportunities everywhere I look is an outstanding achievement. My aspirations were always to complete a Civil Engineering degree in University, and Atkins are giving me the opportunity to do that and more. Gaining real experience while working in the industry alongside studying is ideal, and it will put me in great form for eventually becoming a Chartered Civil Engineer.
