The Central Rail Systems Alliance is formed by partners Network Rail, Balfour Beatty, Atkins and TSO. Together they are responsible for the delivery of multi-disciplinary railway upgrade projects on the North West & Central, and Eastern regions of Network Rail’s recently devolved routes.

The programme of works delivered by the teams is valued at £2bn and manages the development, design and delivery of Switches and Crossings and Plain Line renewals as its core business but is also responsible for the delivery of major enhancement projects.

As a valued member of the team, you will play a key role in improving the railway industry for passengers and freight.

You will have the opportunity to apply your engineering knowledge and gain a broad range of experience working in a multi-disciplinary team of experts. This is a fantastic opportunity to support in delivering core renewal and enhancement schemes while working closely with other disciplines to ensure a fully integrated design is achieved.

You’ll also collaborate with construction partners to produce railway designs for the railway system which will allow you to develop as a well-rounded engineer or project manager and gain a fast track to chartership.

Locations: Birmingham, Cambridge, Chelmsford, Croydon, Epsom, Glasgow, Manchester, York

Our teams work on a broad array of projects within the rail and highways markets from flagship projects such as HS2, East West Rail, Sizewell C to essential maintenance and renewal projects with Network Rail, National Highways and local authorities. Opportunities also exist to support other sectors within the AtkinsRéalis business including, Infrastructure, Energy, Nuclear and Defence.

You’ll join one of our design teams and gain technical experience of power and distribution systems (Low Voltage and High Voltage), lighting design and specialist systems engineering skills such as Earthing & Bonding and Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC). To start, you will work within a technical role, working with industry leaders and undertaking a variety of day-to-day project related tasks including:

• Technical report writing.
• Site surveys.
• Preparation of technical design drawings using computer aided modelling.
• Modelling electrical systems using specialised software (Trimble, ETAP, Dialux, Lighting Reality, ERACS, PSpice, Matlab).
• Applying electrical and physics fundamental theory to solve engineering problems.
• Applying sustainable thinking and methods to all projects to help Atkins and our clients attain their Net Zero pledges.

We design electrical systems across the network including stations and depots, as well as the lineside infrastructure which powers trains, track and signals, ensuring that they are integrated to provide a safe and reliable rail network. We also design public realm, highway and interior lighting systems.

Secondment opportunities throughout your graduate programme are also encouraged, allowing you to gain a better understanding of project lifecycles. These may include project management or construction, as well as the opportunity to work within other disciplines such as Signalling, Telecoms and Safety Assurance.

We work collaboratively with colleagues across the UK, Middle East, North America, Australia and Asia, allowing you to work on projects across different global regions. Working on flagship projects is different countries may also provide the opportunity to work abroad, should this interest you. Working as a graduate in our Transportation (Rail and Highways) teams will allow you to gain a variety of experience including technical, management, commercial and leadership to enable you to pursue a fulfilling career with Atkins and develop as a well-rounded engineer or project manager.

The scheme will enable you to develop towards chartership with a relevant institution such as the IET, CIBSE or ILP. This will be paired with progression opportunities within Atkins to progress to more senior roles.
