What semesters is the Atkins Minority STEM Scholarship awarded?
Scholarships are awarded for the fall and spring semesters.
Do I need to provide official transcripts?
Unofficial transcripts are acceptable. However, they must legible and must include the students name and student ID number.
Who should I ask to write my letter of recommendation?
Start by asking a professor, department head or mentor. Past recipients can also ask past/current employers or community service leaders.
What is considered an acceptable recommendation letter?
A recommendation letter is similar to a professional reference; choose someone who can articulate your strengths and praise your accomplishments. Recommendation letters should be written on university/company letterhead and signed by the writer. Letters can be sent in by students as part of their application packet or can be emailed to the inbox directly by the person who wrote it.
How quickly will I be notified on the status of my application?
You will typically receive an email once your complete application packet is received. After the term window has closed, we will conduct a full screening of all applications to determine which applicants are going to the first round of reviews. From there, finalists will be sent to the Foundation board for review and selection. This process can take between 6 and 8 weeks. We will notify students that have been selected by phone and a follow-up email.
If I am selected as a recipient, how will I receive the award?
Funds are sent directly to the university to be credited to the students tuition account. Applicants that have full scholarships or have already covered expenses for the semester, should check with the university to determine if any excess funds will be paid out to students or applied towards other accounts. There are no exceptions to this process.
If I submitted the complete application by the scholarship deadline and met the minimum criteria, why wasn’t I awarded a scholarship?
The Atkins Foundation makes every effort to equitably award as many scholarships as possible; however, scholarship awarding is based on the availability of limited funding.
