Insights Design a Sustainable Future in Saudi Arabia as an Architect
With Saudi Arabia and UAE leading the $1.36tn Middle East construction boom, there has never been a better time to explore engineering, architecture, and design careers in this region.
At AtkinsRéalis and its Atkins, and Faithful+Gould businesses, we are combining our technological skills with our traditional engineering expertise to deliver exceptional results on the biggest projects in the Middle East.
We’re looking for Design Architects in Saudi Arabia to deliver sustainable solutions on some of the most unique and challenging projects such as NEOM, the AlUla Project, and The Red Sea Project. Ready for your next challenge? Learn about what Design Architects do and how they drive sustainability in this blog.
What does a Design Architect do?
Design Architects are responsible for the design and planning of buildings and structures. They play a key role in translating ideas into functional and innovative architectural solutions.
Depending on the size of the project and the client you are working with, your responsibilities can vary:
- Design Conception - you’ll work closely with clients, engineers, and other stakeholders to understand the project requirements and create design concepts based on this information.
- Site Analysis - in order to understand the surrounding environment and optimise the space, a site analysis is conducted to take into account factors such as government and safety regulations, environmental considerations, and more.
As a Design Architect, you’ll need to stay up to date with regulations and codes of practice for the areas where you are designing. As well as staying up to date with the latest industry developments so you can deliver innovative and environmentally responsible designs.
- Building Design and Development - you’ll create detailed architectural drawings, designs, and plans using technology such as AutoCAD and REVIT. In this role, you’ll collaborate with Structural Engineers, Project Managers, and Construction teams to ensure the successful implementation of your designs.
What makes a great Design Architect?
Creativity, attention to detail, problem-solving, and communication skills. And that’s just the soft skills. Combining these with technical knowledge of architectural design and knowledge of sustainable design principles is what will set you apart and also make you a great fit at AtkinsRéalis , including Atkins and Faithful+Gould.
We are looking for the brightest minds who are collaborators and innovators to help our clients understand and make decisions confidently in complex situations.
How Design Architects are driving sustainability
At AtkinsRéalis , including Atkins and Faithful+Gould, we’re not just embracing change – we’re driving it. As a leader in the design and delivery of the built environment, we have a tremendous opportunity to have a positive impact on society and make the world more environmentally sustainable for all.
- Sustainable Design Principles - Design Architects incorporate these principles into their projects to minimise the environmental impact. With the aim of increasing energy efficiency, reducing carbon footprints, and promoting the use of renewable materials, these principles inform environmentally responsible designs.
- Site Analysis - during this process, Design Architects will consider how to maximise natural resources and minimize negative impacts. They’ll consider factors such as solar orientation or prevailing winds as this would affect the buildings' placement. One way to increase energy efficiency would be to maximise the use of natural daylight where possible.
- Resource Selection - Design Architects select every resource with intention behind it. They’ll consider the lifecycle of the material if it can be recycled, if it is renewable and so much more.
This applies for the systems they select too. For example, they will consider what technologies will work best with the building or structure such as energy-efficient HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) systems, LED lighting, or renewable energy sources (such as solar panels or geothermal systems).
