Equality, diversity & inclusion in Canada

We're not all the same and that's our greatest strength.

Like our geographical footprint here in Canada, our work is diverse. From automated light rail networks to international airports, clean power to community development. This mix of challenges, geologies and cultures requires a vast range of backgrounds and knowledge.

That’s one reason why diversity is important to us. It enhances our ability to understand our clients and communities – especially under-represented groups. So we can create more sustainable, sensitive and inclusive solutions.

Yet ED&I is about much more than business performance. It’s about creating a more welcoming place to work, where everyone feels valued and free to share ideas regardless of background or seniority. And it’s simply the right thing to do

Putting ED&I at the heart of Canada

So we’re on a journey to put these principles at the heart of our culture and day-to-day work. It’s a journey led by all of us – supporting each other to create a more equal, diverse and inclusive place to thrive.

To help us get there faster, we’re aligned to the Company’s global ED&I program – Different makes a difference. What’s more, the Canadian region is about to launch its own tailored action plan to deliver on the issues that matter most to our people here.

Weaving ED&I into everything we do

Join the Canadian team, and you join over 7,000 people from a multitude of different cultures and abilities. Our goal is to make sure that every single person feels included, has an equal voice and that we’re sensitive to your individual needs and ambitions.

You won’t just experience these values inside the organization, you’ll also inspire the world around you – through more inclusive, accessible and sustainable design. Whether it’s supporting public transport with light-rail systems, or supporting Indigenous advancement and long-term prosperity with our Indigenous E3 partnership, we’re designing places that are more sensitive to human differences – in ability, language, culture, gender, age and other forms of diversity. We’re creating a better future, and you can help make it happen.

Removing barriers so we can all thrive

Change can only be driven by the right leaders – trusted, inclusive people who make us feel safe and valued.

This means removing barriers to progress at every level. It means further diversifying our hiring to include all under-represented groups. And it means increasing female representation throughout Canada, especially in leadership

Of course, it doesn’t stop with hiring. No matter who you are, you’ll also be supported with ground-breaking learning opportunities. To unleash your full potential, give you an equal chance of success, and enhance your career.

Becoming a voice for change

We encourage everyone to use their voice to champion progress across Canada. From the top to the bottom, our diverse teams are making a difference – and we’re proud to share our stories about how design can improve lives and communities.

We’re focused on the groups that need the most support in our region–specifically women, people with disabilities and visible minorities. In Canada, for example, Indigenous communities are vital in our work to be more inclusive and fair.

We are committed to increased collaboration and partnering with Indigenous peoples and businesses. To that end, we have adopted a program for Indigenous Relations and Inclusion that includes an employment and training component to encourage and facilitate the employment of Indigenous candidates and support the development of their careers

Measuring progress thoroughly and clearly

We know that progress needs to be both meaningful and measurable – and we’re ready to be challenged on both.

Our ED&I progress is informed by employee experiences and properly evaluated by our people.

It's everyone's business to help make us better

Our journey in Canada is ongoing, and progress doesn’t just come from a program or a leader – we all need to be part of the difference. So we encourage everyone to get involved and make their voices heard. This is most evident in our self-generated Employee Resource Groups – representing groups from women to youth, Indigenous, LGBTQ+ and people with a disability. Every voice matters. And only by hearing them all will we create a culture that fosters true inclusivity and equality.

Founded in Montreal in 2019, the #YAI is a group of more than 1,500 young employees aged 35 and under from all areas of the company. Created with the support of Ian L. Edwards, president and CEO of AtkinsRéalis , the #YAI (Youth Advisor Initiative) now has physical committees present in Montreal, Quebec City, Toronto and Vancouver. #YAI members all share a common desire: to energize the corporate culture, enrich social life, contribute to the meaning and pride of work at AtkinsRéalis , and think differently!

ExcELLEnce is a group that promotes gender equality in Canada. It aims to empower and attract employees to grow, retain and develop female leaders. ExcELLEnce is also focused on strengthening women's voices across the company through networking, collaboration and mentorship. It provides a forum to support members in their professional development.

The Indigenous Circle group is an inclusive community for Indigenous employees and their allies to share information, educate and collaborate on improving Indigenous Relations at AtkinsRéalis and across Canada.

The mission of this group is to celebrate and support LGBTQ+ employees in Canada and the United States through advocacy, mentoring, and representation.
