Insights An SNC-Lavalin intern, inspired to change the world

I’m Jennifer Feng, process engineering intern at AtkinsRéalis , in Perth, Australia. I started my internship here in December 2018. So far, I’m really excited to be working for a huge, global company that is making a difference across the world. And even though it’s one of the biggest global engineering consultancies, I’ve been made to feel like one of the team. My contribution is welcomed on large projects that are improving lives all over Australia.

What has been your most enjoyable experience so far?

I’ve really enjoyed using METSIM to create modified process flowsheets. I had no experience on the METSIM process modelling software before. Having the opportunity to learn how to use it on an actual task was challenging, but also very rewarding. I now fully understand how the modifications affect the process, the logic behind the original model, and the control philosophy of the process.

What is the Mining & Metals team like at AtkinsRéalis ?

The process engineers I work with are very supportive and helpful. They dedicate their time to teach me, trust me on tasks, patiently answer my questions, share their experience, and give me plenty of advice. Engineers from other disciplines, designers, estimators, geologists and other staff help me understand what they do, and are very approachable whenever I need anything.

What encouragement would you give to your female peers thinking about a career in STEM?

If you love science and math, don’t hesitate to choose engineering as your major or career. It will give you the power to make an impact on the big issues of our time – like climate change, the energy crisis, and food security. AtkinsRéalis is an incredible organization that is giving young women like us meaningful support to start their dream careers!
