All set to explore your work horizons and considering the UK? When Filippo moved from Italy to the Midlands, he was looking to gain work experience as a civil engineer—the way he saw it, there were plenty of opportunities here.

Filippo joined Atkins, a member of the AtkinsRéalis Group, in 2020. His colleagues value the skill and enthusiasm he brings to their work on residential and commercial schemes, from master planning to detailed design and construction. He's also respected for his experience in flood alleviation and river and coastal schemes.

Filippo, what excites you about what you’re working on?

Every day, the team is making a difference. I'm designing residential, educational and commercial developments for a growing society. I strive for sustainable development on any project by implementing sustainable drainage systems, for example by using attenuation ponds and open channels rather than buried pipes or underground tanks. This creates a more natural environment and a better place to live.

What made you say yes to working at Atkins?

It's a big company with an excellent reputation, solid company values and most importantly, great people. We work in modern and central offices, and there are plenty of growth opportunities. We get to work on a huge variety of projects, including large UK and global schemes.

What keeps you at Atkins?

My colleagues are welcoming and willing to grow and develop together. Everyone is always available to look at project-related questions with you and ready to get involved in social activities.

Most of my senior colleagues act as my mentors constantly, which makes me feel confident about dealing with project challenges, as I know I can have support when needed. When I manage other people, I guide them and keep them interested in ways I know would benefit their careers and the projects.

What has career progression been like for you at Atkins?

I feel valued and an important part of the team. I've been trusted with a lot of different opportunities. I now enjoy delivering projects more independently, and I'm also responsible for managing junior team members. Yes, I am working to achieve my professional chartership, which requires a great deal of motivation. I have recently been promoted to Civil Engineer Level, and I feel that in my two and half years at Atkins, I've developed well as an engineer.

What advice would you give to professionals thinking about moving to the UK?

Go for it. The UK is growing fast, and there's lots going on for the foreseeable future. It's also a fun place to live—a very cosmopolitan society with friendly and welcoming people.
