Insights How is AI being integrated into ADS&T?

What is ADS&T?

ADS&T stands for aerospace, defence, security, and technology. ADS&T involves research and development, engineering, manufacturing, maintenance, and deployment of new technologies. This sector works closely with government agencies, defence forces, academics, and research institutions.

The talented professionals in this diverse and dynamic field develop cutting-edge technologies and solutions to complex challenges. Take Jo Page, Principal Consultant in ADS&T in the Business Consulting & Transformation practice, for example. Jo and her team spearhead innovation in this sector and here’s what she had to say about working at Atkins:

“We have great people with a wide variety of skills and experiences. The work we do for our clients is wide-ranging and makes a real difference to the public. It's so rewarding to work with such a diverse selection of people to deliver these important projects.”

With AI showing no signs of slowing down, the potential impact on ADS&T is very exciting for this space. The practical applications to AI in ADS&T are vast and here at Atkins, we are at our best when we combine the latest technologies with forward thinking. Here are some of the ways AI is being used to the advantage of ADS&T teams:

Applications and Advantages of Artificial Intelligence in ADS&T

Cybersecurity

A new global study of 1,000 CIOs finds that 82 percent say their organizations are vulnerable to cyberattacks.

In order to remain safe and secure, cybersecurity needs to be an ongoing process that requires continual monitoring. With the introduction of AI, cybersecurity tasks such as threat detection, response, and mitigation can be automated. This means that you are able to stay ahead of evolving cyber threats and protect confidential information and critical infrastructure. AI can respond to or contain threats in real-time.

In the Atkins Aerospace, Defence, Security and Technology division you’ll work with teams across mission critical industries, to contribute to the security and resilience of the nation, or to exploit advanced technology to help clients not only meet but embrace these exciting times.

Automation of routine tasks

AI can perform repetitive and laborious tasks such as welding, assembly, inspection and quality control. This saves time on human labour that can be spent on other more complex and rewarding tasks.

For example, the manufacturing industry automates their supply chain. AI is able to manage inventory, send alerts when inventory is low, detect defects in supply, and can predict maintenance in machines. AI has high precision and is efficient leaving less room for error and as a result, reduces costs.

Autonomous systems

AI enables autonomous systems such as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to have various applications for ADS&T. For example, UAVs are able to autonomously navigate, detect and avoid obstacles when powered with AI.

This increases situational awareness and allows ADS&T teams to have a comprehensive view of different environments without physically being there. Just think about the time a Design Engineer might save if they don’t need to travel every time they’re required to do a site survey.

The innovation potential of autonomous systems stems from two places; creativity and data. And since innovation is one of our core values, we’re continuously on the lookout for more ways to bring creativity and data together. By using AI,our ADS&T teams are able to find new and better ways of doing things.

Data analytics

AI is able to analyse and process large amounts of data through machine learning algorithms. These algorithms are able to identify patterns, trends, or anomalies within the data that can be flagged to ADS&T teams.

Based on these insights, teams are more equipped to make data-driven decisions without spending hours and hours going through large amounts of data.

Not only that, this enables proactive maintenance, early warning signs, and allows teams to be better prepared. For example, in the banking industry, AI in data analytics is used to analyse financial transactions. This allows AI to detect any fraudulent behaviours which are immediately flagged to customers and the bank itself.
