Insights How AtkinsRéalis supports Reservists

Jen H. joined  AtkinsRéalis, in 2017 as a Graduate Engineer in Infrastructure. She joined the reserves soon after becoming a well-rounded Civil Engineer in our Design & Advanced Technology (D&AT) Practice. We caught up with her to see how she enjoys being a Combat Engineer and Soldier in the Royal Engineers:

So far, have you enjoyed your time with the Reserves?

It's been great! It's allowed me to test my engineering problem-solving skills in more physically and mentally pressured situations. To gain more practical experience, I was recently part of a bridge-building exercise where we built a 12-bay double-storey Medium Girder Bridge (MGB). I also represented my Regiment at the King's Coronation as part of the Army Corps Procession Group!

How do you fit your Reserves commitments around work?

AtkinsRéalis and our Partnering with Armed Forces (PwAF) programme support me with an additional 10 days of annual leave. This really helps me make time for all the career courses and annual training.

How has your experience as a Reservist influenced your civilian job?

It has given me more confidence to speak up and build rapport with new groups of people. Being a Reservist has also given me a greater appreciation of a team's diverse backgrounds and perspectives.

Like anything, you get out of it what you put in. If you're thinking of joining, take advantage of the opportunities for adventurous training, career courses and qualifications you can gain while in the Reserves.

What is AtkinsRéalis' Partnering with Armed Forces?

PwAF serves our Armed Forces community by providing an all-round support network, ensuring access to veteran-specific health benefits, wellbeing support, and communicating job opportunities for military spouses and partners.

The programme makes a difference beyond our employees through outreach programs with military resettlement organizations like the Ministry of Defence's Career Transition Partnership, and Forces Families Jobs. We also support military charities like SSAFA through fundraising and further our cause via collaboration among companies in the Employer Recognition Scheme Gold Award Alumni.
