The team, based in London, Epsom, Bristol, Birmingham, Warrington and Leeds works directly with Atkins’ wide multi-disciplinary teams in the UK and across the world on a variety of major infrastructure projects. The team is one of the UKs leading consultancies, at the forefront of thought-leadership in the field of Economics and Planning. It has influenced Government thinking on Infrastructure and Development Planning and provides economic and strategic planning advice to Local Planning Authorities, Local Enterprise Partnerships and Combined Authorities. 

We are currently providing economic and strategic planning support on major UK projects including HS2, Crossrail, West London Orbital, Sheffield City Region Growth Agenda and West of England Joint Spatial Plan. We are also working internationally on the Oman Spatial Strategy, Sustainable Urban, Economic Plans for Kenya (DFID) and opportunities coming through the FCO Prosperity Fund Global Framework.

We are currently looking for an Economist at Associate or Director level to join our successful and progressive team of planners and economists. We operate across the UK so the successful candidate could be based out of any one of our Hub offices (including Bristol, Birmingham, London, Epsom, Warrington or Leeds). There may however be a requirement to work out of other UK offices, client offices, or travel overseas for periods, where the need arises, in order to meet the demands of clients and help to deliver our expanding workload. The successful candidate will play a key role in the development of our growing national business, linking in with other parts of the environmental and infrastructure business throughout Atkins and leading on the winning and delivery of work. 

The position requires an experienced professional with a degree in Economics, Economic Development or relevant discipline, and at least 10 years of relevant experience (preferably in a consulting environment).


Responsibilities 
• Lead the Atkins Economics team and support the Planning and Environmental Consenting Practice management team
• Business development – identify opportunities, lead successful economics bids and provide input into multi-disciplinary bids
• Develop client network and collaborate with colleagues across Atkins to ensure we position ourselves well within the market and assemble technically excellent project teams.
• Technical and financial project management experience to act as Project Manager or Project Director on economics projects
• Team and line management – manage, support and grow the Economics team
• Technical leadership – act as the Technical Authority for Economics, ensuring the technical excellence of the team’s outputs and facilitating the sharing of skills, knowledge and best practice.

Requirements
The ideal candidate will have the following:

• A degree or Masters in a relevant discipline 
• Excellent technical skills in the areas of: 
o Socio-economic impact assessment;
o Economic forecasting;
o Economic appraisal and evaluation;
o Retail and employment land studies;
o Business case development;
o Stakeholder consultation;
o Socio-economic research; 
o Social value and inclusive growth;
o Infrastructure delivery plans and understanding of infrastructure funding mechanisms such as Community Infrastructure Levy and value capture; 
o High level financial modelling skills would be beneficial; and
o Local, regional and national policy and strategy development.
• Proven line management and team leadership experience.
• Proven project management skills – track record of delivering projects on time and budget
• Excellent written and oral communication skills. 
• Excellent numeracy and analytical skills including spreadsheet and other software skills.
• Personal qualities required include being self-motivated, enthusiastic, determined and resilient and with an ability to inspire.
