Our Transportation UK&E division is currently seeking Highways Engineers across our south-east offices; Epsom, Croydon and Chelmsford, to support the delivery of a wide variety of multi-disciplinary highway projects both locally and across the UK. Using your excellent people, technical and delivery skills, you will deliver a variety of highways schemes including new build, renewal, and maintenance works.
You will be part of one of the largest transportation consultancies in the UK, and a leading supplier of highway engineering services to government, regulatory and local authorities, infrastructure owners and operators. Major clients include Highways England, local authorities, design and build contractors and other niche clients. You will also have the opportunity to work on overseas projects and with our internationally based design teams.
You will have a background in highway engineering design and delivery of a range of multi-disciplinary projects within a highways environment. You will be familiar with working in large, geographically dispersed multidisciplinary design teams on projects at varying stages of development from feasibility through to detailed design and construction.
Please note that the salary banding for the role is between £35000 and £45000 depending on experience.

Responsibilities
Technical
•Taking a leading role in highway design delivery for highway and multi-disciplinary projects;
• Developing potential design solutions applying engineering judgement to appraise and recommend options, particularly on highly environmentally and politically sensitive highway projects;
• Overseeing the production of design documentation for highway schemes, including sketches, drawings, calculations, reports and specifications;
• Designs structures such as roads, bridges, other buildings and plans the layout for highways.
• Organise and plans highway projects, arranges work schedules, carries out inspection work and plans maintenance.
• Prepare schedule of quantities;
• Coordination of the highway design with other technical disciplines;
• Check and review of deliverables produced by project teams;
• Staying abreast of industry developments and changes in standards;
• Assisting with the preparation of fee offers for agreement with the client.
Stakeholder
• Maintaining and developing excellent professional relationships with clients, which can secure repeat business;
• Presenting to clients and key stakeholders in a professional, responsive and client focused manner;
• Working collaboratively across the Atkins Group.
Management
• Ability to act as an Assistant Project Manager on major highways schemes including: coordination of resources, budget and programme monitoring, client engagement and reporting, and contract administration;
• Tender evaluations;
• Manage technical delivery within the governance framework of major clients.
People
• Developing more junior staff by technical training and mentoring;
• Work collaboratively and integrate into multi-disciplinary teams and work independently.
Requirements
Technical
• BEng / MEng or MSc degree in civil engineering or equivalent;
• Incorporated or Chartered status and corporate membership of the ICE or CIHT, or able to demonstrate that this will be achieved in an agreed and appropriate timescale;
• Knowledge and experience of working in the DCO pre-application phase of a major road scheme;
• Experience of working with our key clients, e.g. Local Authorities, Highways England, Developers and/or major Contractors;
• Ability to research information and data independently and ability to find solutions to complex problems;
• Understanding of the Design Manual for Roads and Bridges and BIM, and their use in design.
• Prepare technical specifications, schedule of quantities.
Management• Ability to develop and agree design briefs, and manage the internal technical supply chain, including budgets, programme and quality of deliverable, delivering within set time frame;
• Commercial awareness and an excellent communicator, with the desire to take on extra management responsibilities and continuing to develop yours and our team’s skills;
• Knowledge of project governance and processes for Highways England and Local Authorities;
• Good interpersonal skills and ability to converse with a wide range of Clients, external stakeholders, and colleagues across various technical disciplines;
• Excellent spoken and written English;
• Ability to contribute to bids and tenders;
• Experience of client engagement and business development activities.
