Atkins Nuclear Solutions US is currently seeking a Mechanical Engineer to join the nuclear team in Oak Ridge, TN.
Job Description
Engineer shall assist the Project Office in performing a comprehensive review of the Contractor’s final design and provide documented feedback regarding the design’s adequacy.
Performs a variety of engineering calculations using traditional engineering methods to document compliance with project and code requirements, which may include stress calculations, limits and fits and equipment sizing.
Generates and is fully conversant with drawings, layout drawings, arrangement, assembly and detail drawings, specifications and data sheets.
Assists in the preparation and approval of design documents and plant modifications, including supervision of designers in document development in accordance with approved procedures, processes and design requirements.
Provides technical expertise and guidance to develop, manage and implement engineering analysis, activities and programs to identify and resolve equipment and system problems.
Familiar with national codes and standards appropriate to the Mechanical Engineering discipline.
Ensures relevant design criteria, specifications, practices, procedures and codes and site design and safety and licensing basis are used in preparation of design media.
Interfaces with staff, within the team and supporting sub-contractors to ensure work is completed in a safe and efficient manner, ensuring that safety is an integral element embodied in equipment design and specification.
Works in multi-discipline teams on project-based work and ensures integration of design across multiple disciplines.
Performs checking to ensure accuracy of design media in accordance with company policies and procedures and client expectations.
Works to assigned schedules ensuring the accuracy, completeness and timeliness of work and initiates corrective measures to overcome delays.
Understands, complies and is responsible for working to environmental health and safety policies and procedures and attends meetings as required. Provides supervision and leadership to members of the design team, commensurate with seniority.
Recommends new equipment, concepts and techniques to improve performance, simplify design, reduce costs, correct design flaws or to comply with changes in client requirements, codes or regulations.
Staff will be required to provide stand-alone design review reports and integrate their reports into the overall UPO FDR reports. All reports wil use the standard UPO documentation formats.
Documentation would include comments, interview notes, issue statements, conclusions and sections of the overall UPO FDR assessment report.
Support a comprehensive review of the contractors final design and provide documented feedback regarding the design adequacy. At a summary level, the final design review seeks to verify that the program can be safely operated and will be able to meet the Key Performance Parameters (KPPs) stated in the program requirements document (PRD). A detailed FDR review plan will be prepared, approved and implemented.
Documents to be reviewed include but are not limited to: design analysis calculations, safety integrity level calculations, piping & instrument drawings, ventilation & instrumentation diagrams, DOORS input design and testing, model primary input documents, piping & instrumentation diagrams, design criteria, 3D models, quality level determinations, material requisitions, equipment and material specifications, procurement documents, commercial grade dedication plans, program and system requirement documents (redacted), facility interlock controls and safety basis documents.
Provides technical, program analysis, or engineering support and in-depth Subject matter expertise.
Serves in a key technical role.
Develops, reviews, and provides technical guidance regarding policies, plans, orders, and documentation.
Conducts research, performs analyses, and provides input to reports, plans, and briefings.
Work performed under this task may require the contractor and its personnel to gain access to classified and restricted DOE/NNSA data, systems, and facilities. For this reason, the contractor personnel may be required to obtain and maintain and possess a DOE/NNSA Q Clearance.
Job Requirements/Skills
Must be able to interface with government program representatives on high-level technical and project issues.
Ability to successfully make quick decisions and meet goals while working under severe time constraints
Demonstrated ability to be creative with a keen attention to detail
Strong communication skills
Advanced computer skills, including the use of Mechanical Equipment design software and Microsoft Office
Detailed knowledge in functional discipline and its practical application
Detailed knowledge of industry codes and regulations
Required Experience
12 years of experience in Engineering
Experience working on nuclear design and construction projects.
Experience working within the Dept. of Energy Complex
Must demonstrate the ability to review design calculations, drawings, specifications and requirements to determine validity of the project design.
Must demonstrate relevant experience in mechanical systems.
Education
Bachelor's degree required, Advanced degree preferred
Preferred Experience
Expert knowledge on the preparation of critical design (CD) packages and compliance with DOE O 413.3B requirements and processes is preferred
14 years of industry related experience
Knowledge and experience with technologies and systems expected to be used at UPF or from other DOE projects
Knowledge and experience of uranium processing
Certifications
None required but PE preferred
