The Transportation business covers all aspects of multidisciplinary design and management, from inception and options appraisal through to detailed design and delivery/construction support. It is our centre of excellence for the design of highway and rail infrastructure projects. We aim to be the first-choice designer for local and national highway authorities, contractors and developers.

This is a key role in the Transportation Division, with responsibility for the provision of robust and effective commercial support to the delivery of projects across multiple market areas.

The role will have a primary reporting line to the Practice Director Project Delivery, with a secondary reporting line to the Commercial Director Transportation. The Project Delivery Commercial Director will manage a team of commercial professionals as part of a high performing project delivery organisation, with a focus on governance, meeting or exceeding key business performance objectives, and ensuring that commercial risks are properly identified and managed at all times.

It is expected that the Project Delivery Commercial Director shall demonstrate the following attributes:
• A proven track record as a senior Commercial Manager in a project delivery environment, ideally in a related industry
• Professionally qualified with an industry recognised body
• Strong understanding of contractual and commercial principles and processes
• Experience in the application of effective risk management processes
• Excellent communication, negotiation and influencing skills
• Comfortable in a team working environment and with the ability to broker relationships with key stakeholders
• Experienced in dispute management and avoidance

Key Responsibilities
The Commercial Director Project Delivery will be responsible for the following key deliverables:
• To actively participate as part of the senior management team for the Project Delivery Practice
• To lead a team of Commercial Professionals for the provision of commercial support to projects, comprising Consultancy Works, Professional Services and Design and Build schemes across multiple disciplines
• To actively engage with the Market Commercial Managers to ensure that they are properly informed in respect of project performance, commercial risks/issues and to escalate any matters relating to strategic Client relationships
• In conjunction with the Practice Director Project Delivery, to ensure that that all projects are properly resourced from a commercial perspective
• To ensure that a commercial strategy is in place for each project forming part of the portfolio
• To ensure compliance with all company processes, guidelines and rules in respect of project commercial governance and in particular, the Service Delivery Process
• To establish and maintain a project commercial stakeholder management plan and to manage commercial relationships with the Supply Chain, internal stakeholders and (at the appropriate level) Customer stakeholders
• To ensure robust Change Control across the portfolio
• To maintain effective commercial risk management and reporting across the portfolio
• To protect the company’s commercial interests at all times and in particular to minimise commercial exposure and maximise revenue opportunities
• To advise the Practice Director and Project Directors on all commercial matters
• To support the Market Commercial Managers in the management of dispute avoidance and resolution across the portfolio
• To commercially manage the Supply Chain in respect of Project Delivery
• To actively promote and manage professional and career development within the Project Delivery commercial team
• To recruit, retain and develop high quality project commercial staff
• To manage the production of accurate and timely periodic reports and forecasts as required
• To provide commercial support in terms of cost control
• From time to time, to provide commercial resources to support bidding activities

Additional Responsibilities

• To deputise as required for the Commercial Director Transportation and the Practice Director Project Delivery
• To support business improvement initiatives, including the promotion and development of commercial awareness across the business
• To represent the commercial function at appropriate industry forums
• To adopt and promote a responsible approach to health and safety and to challenge poor practices
• To prepare for and cooperate with internal and external audits
• To demonstrate collaborative behaviours in all aspects of the role
• To keep up to date with changes in corporate governance, commercial process and procedures and ensure that any such changes are properly communicated to the team
