Atkins’ Transportation Consultancy Practice comprises circa 900 staff delivering planning, technical and advisory consultancy services to a wide-ranging client base in the UK and overseas. We are part of a larger Transportation business of circa 3,750 talented professionals covering highway, rail and local transport sectors in the UK.

We’re seeking a transport planner with development planning experience to join our South East Transport Planning Practice, based in Epsom, Aldershot or Croydon. We’re an established and successful Practice with a well-balanced blend of transport planning skills and a proven track record of delivering a varied portfolio of projects. As such the role is an opportunity to be engaged in the delivery of a range of projects and offers excellent career prospects.

Our development planning team covers the project lifecycle from Local Plan transport evidence base, site identification, feasibility and masterplanning, through to production of planning documentation, public consultation, post-application negotiations and appeals. The multi-disciplinary nature of the business means that we are able to work as part of an in-house project team to offer clients a true ‘one stop shop’ for the planning, design and delivery of development-led and infrastructure projects.

The team has solid presence within the marketplace and a strong pipeline on a variety of projects, including high profile major road, rail and aviation infrastructure schemes (DCO / TWAO), public realm/urban development schemes, and property/estates development. In addition, we provide development and spatial planning support services for highway authorities.

Key clients currently include Highways England, Transport for London, Network Rail, Hampshire County Council, Portsmouth City Council, Heathrow Airport, St Modwens and The Crown Estate. Some of our key projects include Canary Wharf to Rotherhithe crossing, the Croydon Area Remodelling Scheme, HS2 and the third runway expansion at Heathrow Airport.

Qualifications
• Appropriate academic (degree qualified); and / or demonstrable progress towards achieving qualification of a relevant institution

Essential Criteria
• Previous experience in a transport planning consultancy.
• Experience in supporting Project Managers to successfully deliver development planning projects.
• Experience in using software packages such as TRL Junctions 9, LinSig, TRANSYT, TRICS and census database.
• Experience in contributing to technical reports.
• Able to develop effective and enduring working relationships.
• Understanding of transport planning and policy and the context within which it is achieved.
• Appetite to grow skills and progress towards professional qualification.
• Good communication skills and the ability to build and maintain client relationships and manage stakeholders


Desirable Criteria
• In the process of seeking TPP qualification or equivalent.
• Experience of task management (sub Project Management).
• Experience in public / stakeholder consultation.
• VISSIM Microsimulation
• Involvement in Development Control.
• CAD capabilities
• Experience using GIS.

Responsibilities

Your key responsibilities in this role will include the following:
• Working proactively and supporting project managers in the delivery of development planning projects
• Ensuring that projects are completed to Project Manager specifications, to budgets and deadlines.
• Designing and analysing surveys to obtain data for a wide range of travel activities.
• Forecasting the effects of proposals and devising strategies to cater for generated trips.
• Using software packages using as Junctions 9, LinSig, TRANSYT, TRICS, census database and GIS.
• Progression towards professional qualification.
• Working with planners, traffic modellers, architects, landscape architects, masterplanners and clients as required on technical aspects of projects

The Individual
We seek a candidate that displays awareness of the industry and technical competency to support Project Managers, and the enthusiasm and passion to develop into a specialist.

The ideal candidate needs to be a driven individual with technical experience and an awareness of the development planning industry. The candidate will also be willing to challenge themselves to gain experience on a wide range of transport planning projects across the consultancy practice.
