Insights SNC-Lavalin launches a Welder Community Development program

AtkinsRéalis launched the Welder Community Development program in Secunda, South Africa in August this year. The intensive 1 month program was created to address the shortage of skills identified in the local community and aims to up-skill existing welders and improve their opportunity for employment. Welders are taught how to select, use and care for tools, interpret welding symbols and weld on various grades of steel in all positions that may be encountered on the job.

Traditionally welders require an extended period of training before being able to successfully complete competency assessments and start on-the-job welding. This program was structured to shorten this lead time by identifying local welders who already had a baseline competency and the enthusiasm to learn. Well done to the Human Resources team at the new Inqaba office in Secunda for driving this program as part of their commitment to skills development in the local community.

One of the first 2 learners who successfully completed the program on the 2nd September at our Inqaba Skills Development and Assessment Centre in Secunda said “This opportunity is an opportunity of a lifetime. Thank you very much to AtkinsRéalis and all the people who helped me during this training

The program culminates in the same formal competency assessment used as part of the normal recruitment process for welders employed by AtkinsRéalis in South Africa.  As delegates like Thabo and Zinhle successfully complete the program they will be added to our recruitment database.

We are delighted to announce that another 2 candidates have been selected for the next program which is scheduled to start in September 2019.
